July Use Tax Drop Reflects War-Era Vehicle Sales
A weekly Iowa Press Association release notes use tax in July 1942 totaled 18,864.47 versus 150,587.45 in July 1941, showing the wartime impact on new car sales and use tax. Sales and income taxes rise, use tax falls. Campaign openings loom for Labor Day week as candidates plan broader newspaper reach due to limited travel and tire shortages. The page hints at heated Senate and gubernatorial campaigns, with Herrings and Wilson among key names, while attacks may be subdued.
