Wet Corn is Prospect for Fayette County

About 50 percent or more of Fayette County corn may be late maturing this fall says County Extension Director M. C. Wangsness. If corn is 75 percent silked by early August there is a good chance frosted before maturity with reduced yield. Agricultural Engineer Larry Van Fossen of Iowa State University urges planning for drying or storing moist corn to avoid losses at harvest. If crib space is ample, install unheated air drying equipment in current cribs or icing. if more storage is needed, choose based on use of the corn. High moisture storage is best if cattle feed. selling high moisture corn is generally not possible.
