Long Drouth Dries Up Turkey River
The Turkey River in Howard County has dried up for miles due to a two year drouth. The stream source lies near three heads in central Howard County and was once a water power. Now it runs dry for two to three miles below the source with only occasional springs providing scant water. Ten miles downstream each branch is dry for several rods, Vernon mill dam sees no flow, and water remains too low for cattle. Fish have died in the river bed. Separately, Alvina and Eva Mae Frieden returned Friday from Charles City where they visited sister Mrs. Alton Anders and husband.
