A large gathering east of town marked Swen Haug’s 100th birthday on August 19. Born in Norway October 5, 1814, he emigrated with his family to the U.S. and has lived with his son for years. Attendees spoke of his vitality, sharp mind, and long life.
Rome reports Pope Pius X dead at 1 20 this morning after days of illness. He rallied at times as doctors tried to sustain him, and Cardinals note the solemn scene as reports say the war in Europe weighed on him. The dispatch adds marriage and local notices amid war censorship updates.
Grace Del Boyer and Nathian Evans wed after taking a Cedar Rapids train, then Chicago for a week and a visit to Mattoon Ill.
