Fall fertilization helps alfalfa endure winter weather
University of Minnesota expert Curtis Overdahl explains that what farmers call winterkill often stems from plants lacking food by winter. True winterkill is rare, killing a stand about once every twenty years, regardless of fertilizer. He urges soil tests now to guide fall phosphate ash and sulfur applications and liming so alfalfa store nutrients for winter.
