A Missouri Valley editorial warns against central government control of industry while urging towns to rely on local common sense. It notes consumer movement of products, price signals for livestock, and uneven regional trade. It cites Buckeye Archbold Ohio and Strawberry Point Press about a postmaster becoming a state senator in Iowa.
Sunday’s game pitted the Has Beens against Elgin with a 14 to 13 final in favor of Elgin. Mrs Flora Thompson born Flora Bartlett in 1859 in Austin Minnesota died July 31 1983 at seventy four. She married George Thompson in 1850 Forest City Iowa and later lived fifty three years in Chicago. Survived by husband two sons Ray and Wesley their wives one granddaughter four brothers and one sister plus many relatives. The obituary notes family losses and quotes Benjamin Franklin on taxes and debt.
Albert Paul of Oelwein a longtime Democratic leader was appointed last Wednesday to the office of state parole agent to begin work August 15. The move comes despite opposition from Fay ette county Democrats and recent conflicts over his reelection in 1882. Paul has served as county party chair for twelve years and has been praised for his work with the Elks lodge. He will work under the state board of parole led by George M. Simpson of West Union.
M T Grattan, 85, of Decorah, accused of shooting Claude Meade, 52, a Minneapolis race horse trainer, at Decorah fair grounds on July 21, was bound over by Justice H F Barthell to await the October grand jury. He collapsed in court, was examined by doctors Kuhn Fritchen and Barfoot, then moved to Decorah hospital under guard until the continued preliminary hearing Tuesday afternoon.
State Treasurer Leo J. Wegman announced that in the first six months of the year the gasoline tax refund bureau operated at 26 021 dollars versus 51 635 for the prior six months and the cigarette tax bureau cost 2 893 dollars compared with 10 412 for the last half of 1932. Olgian Bee Frances Green and Anna Ross visited the Lyons home.
