Gordon Zurbriggen will miss Elgin homecoming this week as he works at a Greenland army installation. He arrived in July after a 23 hour air trip, describes vast northern forests, and notes the Eskimos live in bear hides with bare essentials. He comments on daylight, terrain, and Arctic provisions and housing.

C L Chapman Elgin's lone Civil War veteran attended the soldiers reunion at West Union on Tuesday. 141 members attended Lehman reunion at Elgin school grounds on Sunday and Cyria's 8th Community Day on Aug 12 drew a large crowd from across the region.

The Reinhart family gathered at the Holm home on Sunday August 3 for a reunion. Attendees included C. T Reinhart and family from Fountain Minnesota Randi Beardsley from Rochester Minnesota Mr and Mrs Robert Reinhart LaVerne Turner from Waterloo Mrs Anna Skellinger from Nora Springs Mr and Mrs Clarion Olson from Clermont Melvin Reinhart Clarence Tope from West Union Lorain e Reinhart from San Francisco California and Helen Reinhart.
Mrs Johanna Mallwitz aged 97 died August 5 at her daughter’s home in Madison South Dakota. Survived by four daughters one son fifteen grandchildren thirty four great grandchildren four great great grandchildren. Funeral services held at West Center Baptist church Madison on Friday August 8 conducted by Rev J F Althoft.

Born July 19 1911 in Buchanan County he lived in Wadena most of his life, served as Navy flight instructor in Dubuque, and worked seven years at Clermont airport. Survived by wife Jennie Schippers DeCook two children Joseph Allen and Virginia Lea and several stepchildren and relatives.
Fred Pinney writes a homecoming sketch detailing Elgin's early history. Immigrant Swiss and Norwegian settlers shaped Shinbone Valley along Turkey River, with Fort Atkinson era conflicts, Sac and Fox ties, and Sioux battles. The valley, called Little Switzerland, later housed canning, hatchery, and mills, growing into a friendly, modest town.
Lydia Friederich born Elgin August 22 1886 died July 30 1959 at age 68. She married John Reitz in 1907 producing four children then Hans Friederich in 1922 with two more. husband and a son predeceased her. Survived by five children and three grandchildren. siblings noted. Funeral at Frei burg Haugh Taylor Missouri with Apostolic Christian rites. Burial at Oie Church cemetery. Lil Olson returned home from Postville hospital where he had been a medical patient for about a week. He is cared for at his mother Emma Olson's home. Roberta Wilson broke her left arm Monday evening just above the wrist. Kenneth Schori of Chicago is a medical patient in the Veterans Hospital at Hines in room 220 Ward 6. Lydia Martie was a patient at St Joseph's hospital from Wednesday to Friday for observation and minor surgery.
