Late summer alfalfa seeding aids next year's hay crop
Farmers learn fall seeding advantages for alfalfa with shallow tillage in August or September, use of a cultipacker, and proper seed depth. Field tests show 80 to 120 pounds of phosphate per acre can boost first cutting yields by 1,000 to 2,000 pounds per acre, with up to 31 percent higher phosphorus in hay. Drawbacks include scarce late summer rains and potential grasshopper damage, mitigated by spraying and seed inoculation for strong stands and high protein yields.
