The Elgin Echo Dial, 3711 Elgin Iowa, is printed weekly and entered as second class mail matter from September 1, 1891, at Elgin post office, Fayette County, under the 52 act. Published every Wednesday by Hermen and Bartuneek.
Subscription rates listed: $2.50 per year for four N E Iowa counties, $3.00 per year for outside territory, with $2.50 paid in advance and 500 per year extra for both zones.
The Marion Busy Bees 4-H Club hosted its annual Achievement Show on July 31 at Elgin Lutheran Church with 16 members and 21 guests. Judges Maridee Hunter and Guernsey Smith evaluated 9 entries, followed by a dress revue narrated by Helen Christen, a skit "The Three Bears" by Ann Frieden and Genevieve Christen, and reports and demonstrations preparing for the Clayton County Fair including "Aprons on Porsde" and "Terry Surprises" by listed members.
The judges gave their comments about the exhibits. Lunch was served.
Elgin High School Class of 1955 held its 8th reunion on Sunday August 4 at the Donald Sutter residence. A noon pot luck dinner drew many attendees listed by name and hometown including Peters Cedar Falls Burks Cedar Rapids Johnson Volge Brackin LaPorte City Capper Iowa City Winter Postville Hanson West Union Schaer Wheaton Snyder Omaha Novak Overland Park Medberry Sutter and others from Elgin and surrounding areas.
Newly married couple Loren Casper and Tweed Brooks plan to reside in Shreveport Louisiana after a wedding at Wallace Chapel Lovers Lane Methodist Church. Rev Merle Weaver officiated. Bride’s father Will W Brooks gave her in marriage. Couple’s parents are Mr and Mrs Brooks and Mr and Mrs Lyle L Leath of Rockford Illinois. Honor attendants were Miss Mary Simmons Arcadia California and Bob Springer Atlanta Georgia. Bride attended University of Oklahoma and groom is University of Denver graduate. Casper is grandson of Bertha Lehman.
Mr and Mrs Wm Torkelson hosted a picnic supper Sunday evening for Capt and Mrs Leo E Olesen Rebecca and Robert of Rantoul IL. Attendees included Faye Thornton Waucoma Wm Torkelson and Susan Hofer Cedar Rapids Sylvan Torkelson family Luana Albert L Dennler family Neil Krieg family Alma Arlene and Corrinne Scholen. The Olesens stayed overnight and departed for Rantoul IL Monday.
A family picnic was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Klingman and Karen Sunday honoring their houseguests Mrs. Keith Granger Ann and Jo Lynn from Phoenix Arizona and Mrs. Mary Barrett's birthday. Others present included Mr. and Mrs. Phil Gaines Stuart Lenzen Cedar Rapids Mr. and Mrs. F. D. Medd and Timothy Waconia Minnesota Mr. and Mrs. Roy Barrett and Diane Arlington Mr. and Mrs. Robert Barrett and family Waukon Mrs Gordon Leibahn and James Barrett Oronoco Minnesota and Mr. and Mrs. Merle Medd Fort Dodge.
The Martie reunion gathered 67 members and nine guests at the Reierson home with co host Mrs Wander. Nine births and one death were reported. Oldest member Ole Reierson, youngest Lynn Marie Wander six months, daughter of the Wanders of Mason City. Attendees included the Martie family from Osage Kensett Mason City Cedar Rapids Oelwein Bakersfield Calif Monona and other relatives and friends.

The Ruroden reunion was held at the West Union fair grounds on Sunday August 4. The Elgin Class of 1936 held a reunion and picnic dinner at the Abe Habeger home Sunday noon August 4. Nineteen graduates attended including six girls listed with married names and towns. Members mailed letters from across the country and Calif, with readings during the gathering before an afternoon of visiting.
The biennial Gehring reunion was held Aug. 4 at the home of Mrs. Elizabeth Schneider. Eighty members registered for a basket dinner and social time. Special recognition went to Elizabeth Schneider as oldest member and to John and Mrs. Bailey for the longest marriage. Numerous attendees traveled from Aledo Portage Cedar Falls Minneapolis and other cities to join relatives in a large, multi-generational gathering.
Elgin residents and guests visited during the week with neighbors and relatives. Mrs. Carlton Looby and Twy la of Oelwein spent Monday with Mrs. Anne Dennler. Mr. and Mrs. Emil Halverson of San Diego were Monday visitors to Mrs. Inez Shaffer.
Saturday and weekend visitors from Quincy Minneapolis Roanoke and more filled many Iowa homes for gatherings and homecoming events. Numerous families hosted relatives for dinners picnics and casual visits, with several groups attending Elgin Elgin homecomings and N A B ministers conference preparations. News records a flurry of social arrivals including Butikofers Kohls Sutter Krueger and Breitkreuz families across Cedar Falls Oelwein Waterloo Wilton Junction and other towns.
The Homecoming events featured shy sprint results with Ann and Diane Larson leading girls 12 and under, Bob Reeder topping boys 12 and under, and Linda Gardner winning the 60 yard dash. Winners of football throw distance and softball throws were noted along with tug of war and a lively doll and pet parade. The event drew at least 150 participants and showcased many local families, including the Gardner, Larson, and Reeder clans.
