Fertilizer boosts corn yields in ISU tests
Three years of tests at the Iowa State College Experiment Station show thicker corn stands improve returns from fertilizer. Even without fertilizer, fertile Iowa soils yield better with denser stands. Adding one stalk per hill may raise yields 8 to 16 bushels per acre on fertile or well fertilized fields. one more stalk per hill adds about 4,000 stalks per acre in a 40 by 40 inch layout.
