New Beer Law Pass Fails in Senate and Dims Liberal Push
The proposed beer law would set license numbers by population, ban sales outside towns, require zoning to keep beer joints away from certain venues, and restrict dancing to large spaces. It would eliminate class C retail permits, raise class B fees, bar under 21 work in beer parlors, and curb beer sales to minors with reliefs barred. The liquor-by-the-drink bill, once seen as a panacea, suffered a heavy House defeat with 16 votes in support and 90 against, ending efforts to liberalize liquor sales in Iowa for two more years.
