Pleasant Valley history marks early Elgin and dam mill
From the 1878 History of Fayette County the Pleasant Valley township sketch recounts 1848 49 settlement efforts by Samuel Connor Simeon Forbes Jacob Ashby and Thomas Smith. It notes the first log house and sawmill at Section 14 and 22, the Dimond Connor mill still operating, and the Shin Bone Valley name origin tied to Sac and Winnebago burial grounds and a Whirling Thunder grave legend. Indians held annual gravesite ceremonies with a poignant reminder to settlers about grave protection. The piece hints at future historical sketches of the town.
