Old Fayette County Troops in the War
A Fayette County sketch recalls the Ninth Iowa Volunteers in the Civil War. Mustered for service at Benton Barracks, they joined Curtis’s army, pursued Price into Missouri and Arkansas, and fought at Pea Ridge, Vicksburg, and Lookout Mountain. The regiment endured Young’s Point swampland, marched 410 miles, and served with valor across many battles before mustering out at Louisville in 1864 and disbanding at Clinton, Kansas.
