No Passing Signs Gain Speed in Iowa Traffic Safety

Iowa motorists soon to have about 7500 pennant shaped no passing zone signs at an estimated cost of 100000 dollars. The signs, unique to Iowa, were proposed in 1958 to reduce violations and improve safety even when yellow lines are obscured. By Dec 31 1958 589 signs were placed on US 30 from Clinton to the Missouri River Bridge. Public response was strong and in spring 1959 more signs and an expanded erection program were approved. Highway Patrol chief Dave Herrick praised the feature as a top safety adoption. Iowa recorded 28330 deaths in 1959 up two percent from 27761 in 1958, the highest annual toll in 25 years.
