Receipts at the State Fair climbed to 41000 this year from 33000 last year. Officials called the result a good showing and gratifying to management. The favorable weather contributed much to the success of the enterprise.
Last Saturday morning six criminals faced Judge Hindman with guilty pleas. Four were charged under the Prohibitory Liquor Law, one for arson, one for grand larceny. Sentences included fines of 600 dollars for liquor cases, 500 for a Dayen case, and two years and six months hard labor for Springer in Ackley. A 15 year old, Engle, received Reform School placement after a guilty theft plea. The article notes size estimates of two unnamed criminals and reports Republican gains in Vermont and Maine with sizable majorities.
Col Henderson will address Iowa Falls and nearby residents Friday at 2 PM on campaign questions. The event, only chance to hear him in the county, is part of an effort to visit each county in the third district. Eldora travelers can ride the C1. & D. for 66 cents round trip, with the Eldora band ready to perform. Both Republicans and Democrats are urged to attend in large numbers.
John Ely of Eldora area slipped from a Hawkeye House platform at Des Moines State Fair into an open cellar about ten feet deep. August Mitterer alerted helpers. Ely was rescued, lapsed into apparent death, revived, then cared for until Monday. No cellar protection led to damage prosecution.
Two prize steers owned by Harker and Noyes at the State Fair stood seven feet one inch and six years old on two tall frames. The pair were the largest bovines seen at the event, raised in Green County.

Hardin County Board of Supervisors met September 1888 to discuss rebuilding bridges and culverts west of A. K. McFarland residence. They approved various road and bridge reports, examined Poor Farm expenditures, and appointed a Soldiers relief Commission. Tax remissions were granted for widows and for losses by fire, with several road changes approved and adjournments noted.
