Washixeton City February 21 The bill to incorporate the Atlantic and Pacine Ship Railway was returned to the house with amendments. Changes include requiring a vessel of 4,004 tons burden instead of 3,000, defect in facility of government. An amendment to accept US currency or Mexican silver dollars for tolls. The bill makes the United States guarantor of revenue to the canal at 3 percent of 50,000,000 dollars.
A wounded desperate French soldier fired two shots in the chamber of deputies in Paris to secure a hearing. He claimed ill treatment by superiors and sought attention for grievances. He identified as Foerere, an officer in the breach arm, and said a letter to M Clemenceau named betrayers of Motz.
In Shamokin Hill Pa on February 26 a mill owned by Lillie drew twin six year old sisters Katie and Susie into a revolving shaft. Katie died from a fractured skull and severe injuries. Susie survived but with extensive injuries and a grim prognosis. Their elder sister found them after an hour of being drawn around the shaft.
The Republican state central committee organized with State Senator Huston as chairman and L. T. Michener as secretary. They discussed the coming campaign and passed a resolution stating that no appointment should be confirmed if the predecessor was removed on charges until investigations are complete, sending a copy to Senator Harrison.
An elderly woman, reportedly sister of ex Gov Seymour, was blown from a Lake Shore train between Erie and Dunkirk during a gale. She stepped from the dining car to the sleeper with her husband and was swept off the platform as the train passed. The husband escaped, the train stopped, and she was found about a mile back with a deep gash near her left temple. She was taken to a Dunkirk hotel. The woman’s exact name and age were not learned.
New York reports that General Ulysses S Grant signed a contract to publish his memoirs granting him 70 percent of war profits. $1,000 paid upfront, edition of 325,000 printed, fewer than 12,000 remain, and 40 presses churn out the book. Grant received $200,000, with expectations of about $530,000 total from the publication. Meanwhile Jake Sharp Broadway railroad case advances threaten prosecutions. several aldermen allegedly bribed have fled to Lakewood New Jersey or Canada. Roscoe Conkling holds sensational evidence but refuses to reveal it, promising public release.
Indianapolis February 6 An Indiana Democratic Editorial Association session drew around fifty. Lott Ray of Silverville Emerat president criticized the present administration and mocked civil service reform while defending a clean, competent Democratic workforce and the party's right to shape reform. Speakers from the Democratic press urged trust in reform yet denounced the hollow mock examinations and political tinkering. The gathering ended with addresses from Secretary Myers and a presidency election. Corvus, Ohio February 25 Col W P Rend of Chicago hailed the miners and operators conference, predicting arbitration will end strikes and that Indiana mine disputes will ease with healthier veal demand and firmer prices.

Paia Pa., Feb. 26. The department commander of the Grand Army of the Republic appoints a committee to thoroughly investigate charges published in The Record against soldiers' orphan schools in the state. Governor Pattison may authorize prosecutions. The panel will inspect schools, examine management, care and treatment of pups, and ensure lawful operation.
Word reaches El Paso of Gen Crook and Geronimo meeting at a ranch. The chief and five bucks sought peace via return to the reservation but Crook demanded unconditional surrender. Geronimo declined and moved to his camp with hostages Nana and another. He is said to have ninety bucks with women and children. No pursuit is planned.

In Sandwich on Cape Cod, February 25, a Swedish girl named Christina stirred a feud between two local farmers. The rivals fought with bare fists after rides to a secluded spot, the loser agreeing to stay away from the girl. Both combatants were exhausted and carried home as the brawl ended in a draw.

Jacksonville officials announce the Jacksonville Tampa and Key West railroad opened between Jacksonville and Stanford on Monday, completing a direct all-route link from New York to Tampa.
