He cites increased duties on fish as the best way to make provincials pay for selling in the U S market. Bayard replies that he hopes interference ceases and will press the British minister with facts and affidavits.
In Washington on July 10 there is notable public concern about the Payne inquiry among privileges and elections committee members. Chairman Hoar issued a public card stating that no senator requested secrecy on votes by committee members regarding the investigation into the alleged impostors in Senator Payne’s election.
Washington July 7 The nomination of Fitz John Porter as colonel in the army was sent to the senate Tuesday The president nominated Porter to a colonelship to rank as such from May 14 1861 that being the grade in rank held by him at the time of his dismissal from the army.
The Minneapolis post office was burglarized Thursday night. The safe was blown, about $20,000 in stamps and over $100 in cash were stolen. No suspects named yet. Beecher Preaches to the British at Union Chapel Islington. Rev. Henry Ward Beecher urged Christian unity through love and noted Catholic priests among his friends as he addressed a crowded church.

Sam Archer, longtime member of the Archer gang of desperadoes, was hanged by the sheriff on Friday for the brutal murder of Samuel A. Bunch on July 7 in Shoats. The execution ends Archer’s crime spree and removes a notorious figure from the region.
