The Melrose township Sunday schools held their annual convention at Melrose M. B. church last Sunday. A. M Caldwell transported attendees with a reliable horse and buggy, and the packed house enjoyed fine music and remarks by Robert Sayre Rev. A Crossen and others. The event featured a lively Sabbath observance talk, poetry by Mr Moser, and generous dinners, with praise for hosts B. Sayre and family and a memorable, wholesome day.
The case against Mrs Bertha Diggle for poisoning her husband resumes with testimony and arguments by prosecutors W T K Stumphrey and A R Ladd and defense by C M Nagle. Mayor Filkins orders continued holding to await grand jury action with bail set at 1000 dollars, and bondsmen signers discussed amid concerns over security and county records.
J Q Rathbone of Eldora Iowa, an uncle of the writer, visited the city last Saturday while exploring western locations for investment. He has served three terms as Hardin county auditor and, at the end of his term, is expected to return to the countryside and make it his home.
The Republican Club meets at the courthouse Monday July 9 at 8 pm to hear brief talks on The Third Party The Democratic Administration The New South The Farmer and the Tariff Equal Representation and Benjamin Harrison Speakers include CG Hays John T Boylan J I Bales M Brownell J F Jardin and W J Moir Each speech limited to ten minutes with a planned 9 pm close All invited and urged to bring neighbors Ex Com order.
The El Dora charge will host its third quarterly meeting at the M E church next Saturday and Sunday with preaching Saturday evening and Sunday morning and evening, and quarterly conference at 2 p m on Monday. Miss Essie Sulbert attended the District meeting of the W C I U at Waterloo reporting a very interesting session. Mrs Shinman was re elected president by acclamation as temperance work grows. Local notes include Mr S C Benedict of the De Witt Observer in town, bids for a bridge at Town Falls rejected, a lawn sociable at Rev Morrison’s, a thriving harvest outlook with strong crops, and the union Sunday school picnic planned for Town Falls area next Wednesday. Also obituary for Mrs Morris Frisbie and a note on Eldora and area travels for Lona’s harvest prospects.
JWerndon Courant reports the Courant man and seven Rathbones enjoyed a pleasant trip to the new town of Jennings in Decatur County last Sunday. A light rain was noted as welcome for the area’s needs.
A health focused piece argues that only Royal Baking Powder is free from lime and alum among common powders. It cites Prof. McMurtrie and New York Times reporting on refined cream of tartar and Royal’s exclusive process costing about half a million dollars.
A marked New Hampton Tribune copy prints testimonials praising M. E. Billings of Waverly, recently convicted of manslaughter in the Kingsley case. The Cedar Rapids Republican denounces the publication as sympathy fueling lies, urging punishment rather than extenuation for the crime and condemning use of such testimonials to influence justice.
The Tardin County Normal Institute will be held at Vidora starting Monday August 6 for two weeks. F B Cooper of Le Mars will conduct the institute. Board for teachers is $3.00 per week. It is expected to be one of the most interesting and profitable sessions in Sardin county school work.
At the bride’s grandmother residence on June 28 1888 Rev N F Morrison marries Robert I Thomas to Anna May Springer Corbett to Eva B Surles wed in Eldora on July 1 1888 by Rev N T Morrison.
An informal note claims President Cleveland offered to wager coppers with the Republican nominee for New York electoral votes. Mr Harrison, described as a deacon, reportedly declined, saying he opposed games of chance.
Two high grade Hereford bulls aged one year are offered for sale. Described as beauties, the animals are listed by WM. Wildman in New Providence with contact at 27.
J. W. Peisen advertises the best assortment of footwear available in the county, promising a wide range of styles and sizes to meet every customer need.
An old classified item promotes the cheapest washing drying and ironing machinery. It lists J B Bainny as agent and urges those in debt to settle at once. It also advertises straw hats, a house with water, cash or monthly payment options, and a Phileton leather top item. James Reygroups is mentioned.
J. J. Sarr & Son advertise 800 yards of carpet at 20c per yard and a 66 by 25 ob item. Haas Bros promote Rockford Shoe in Cordovan Kangaroo and French Calf with hand and machine sewing at J. W. Peisen’s shop. Fifty gold headed silk umbrellas priced 1.25 to 7.50 each offered as this week’s low prices.
