A jewelry firm runner hurled a trunk from a freight train at Gifford on a Wednesday afternoon. It struck a snow drift and rolled onto the track, sending a lumber car off the rails but caused no damage beyond the cover breaking. Jewelry remained intact. Sheriff reportedly seized assets as Des Moines stock venture emerges with W. T. at its head with $25,000 capital.
Presiding Elder Magee announces a new young pastor from Independence named Wilson Backus to lead Steamboat Rock work including Fairfax appointment. He will preach on Sunday the 28th. Magee earns high praise for diligence and promising leadership on the district.
Mrs. J M Hedges visited from Albion over the weekend and returned Monday. The family plans to reside in Eldora soon as they seek a house to buy or rent. Mr Hedges maintains business and family ties here and intends to settle locally.

Last Friday evening Everts, staying with Fred Steer in the west part of town, went to Steer’s house for his coat. The door opened after hammering, Steer struck Everts with a hatchet in a severe head wound. Doctors removed a bone fragment and Everts is recovering. Steer was examined Saturday and sent to Grundy Center for safe keeping until court.

Dr. Thomas Hollis of Radcliffe narrowly escaped death last week when a flax seed bin suction pulled him under as it opened for cleaning. He yelled three times, was found half submerged, and rescued after being hauled out with ropes. His eyes and ears were full of seed, a close call indeed.

Monday evening the high school Literary Society held its inaugural meeting. The exercises impressed with strong speaking, excellent singing, and superb paper. A large audience stayed engaged as the president and secretary showcased notable leadership, supporting the view that women are born to lead.
Last weekend Eldora M E Church held a notable quarterly meeting with Presiding Elder Magee preaching to an increasing revival influenced congregation. The pastor’s hard work has brought steady involvement, a growing Sunday School, and broader business and professional participation, despite some discordant elements. The paper views this as the start of better days for the church.
At the home of the brides parents in Providence township on Thursday February 11 Virgil Williams married Emma Thornton with Rev M Wing officiating. The groom is a prosperous young farmer and the bride is Daniel Thornton’s daughter. A large number of guests attended and the couple received many presents reflecting the regard of their friends.
William Anderson of Union died after a freight train struck him on the T and N W track about a mile east of Radcliffe on Sunday evening. He tried to dive clear but a snow plow attached to the engine reached too far and crushed his skull. The engineer attempted to stop the train but could not save him.
A sociable festival at Sheffield Hall Friday evening. a marriage at George Lane’s residence unites Mr Frank Hartman of Shoshone Idaho with Miss Frankie Lane of the city. The couple plans westward departure soon. Oyster suppers and parties are popular. Will Gerhart departs for Kansas this week, leaving many friends, especially among the fair. Revs Barker and Gifford spoke Sunday, and Sheffield’s literary event Thursday was a success. Public sales remain common though prices falter.
On Tuesday February 9, Robert Mewhister celebrated his 40th birthday with a surprise raid on his home by about thirty friends. The gathering included a splendid dinner prepared by the ladies and a social, friendly atmosphere. He received a commemorative album from the guests.
