Milwaukee Aug 14 A correspondent quotes Archbishop Heiss saying no US decision exists to ban the Knights of Labor and that such action may only apply to Canada with Rome approval. Chicago view says the Rome decree may not extend to the local association and that many members are practical Catholics.
New York reports nine of fourteen cigar manufacturers agreed to open shops to all workers and reinstate those who left or were discharged, regardless of union membership. Unions hail the victory as trades open and workers return. Delegates in Des Moines nominate W. L. Carpenter for Congress, linked to Farmers' Protective association and barbed wire access. In Youngstown, Vailey mill dispute shuts down works, roughers demand pay rise but the Amalgamated Association fails to settle. Illinois State Fair in Chicago eyes strong livestock and farm product displays with revised premiums and improved rail transport. exhibitor facilities to be enhanced and press access assured.
A boiler explosion on the Foster farm near Jefferson Wisconsin instantly killed five men including engineer Anthony Klein and his sons Joseph Lester and a 10 year old boy. Another son aged 8 and a man named Fisher were fatally scalded. Several others were injured.
Fuses burned down to the powder preventing a likely explosion that would have killed or wounded many. As the orange processionists paraded the city walls a mob showered stones and missiles, injuring several paraders including Rev. Mr. Alphert, the cathedral curate. Fears of serious trouble rise as excitement grows.
Massive gathering at Murdocs camp-meeting grounds attracts an estimated 40 000 to 60 000 as Bishop Dwight of Boston presides at morning service delivering sermons to about 20 000. The crowd shows strong religious fervor with hundreds reportedly converting. The event continues through Thursday.
A harbor squall capsized the schooner Oregon and the sloop Frolic. Four of five aboard on the Oregon drowned. all six aboard the Frolic died. Names include W. S. Hayden, music professor, 47. his sons Fred V. and Edward, both 14. William P. Henderson, 19. James W. Lansing, 24. and one unnamed crew member.
In Nashville on the fifteenth ballot the Democratic state convention nominated Robert L. Taylor for governor. Taylor, a Knoxville pension agent, did not attend the meeting on Washington’s advice. His brother A A Taylor is his Republican opponent, nominated June 11. The father seeks the Prohibition nomination but may not run. In Evansville Indiana, workingmen in First district met to back labor representation and nominated J G Nisbeth for congress, with John Muscher as chairman and H B Stewart as secretary.
Washington territory sees William G. Langford named associate justice of the supreme court while Gustave Van Hoorebeke is appointed United States attorney for the southern district of Illinois by the president.
In New York on August 10 Squire and Flynn were indicted for a misdemeanor. They were arrested Tuesday afternoon and held on $10,000 bail by Recorder Smyth. Flynn surrendered himself.
Secretary John E Brewster of the Washington Park club Henry Walker a jockey and John Green owner of Hop Sing were arrested on warrants from Illinois Humane Society President John G Shortall overdriving cruelty in steeplechase races. Bonds posted for appearance before Justice White next Monday. Shortall plans to curb such races while allowing the current meeting to proceed.
New York Aug 12 Frank H Hamilton eminent surgeon dies at 10 25 am after two week illness. Founder of Bellevue Hospital Medical College in 1861 he served as professor of surgery and later visiting and consulting surgeon. He aided in President Garfield’s case after the 1881 shooting and death.
Washington Aug 1 The Post reports Mr James G Bisine seeks to assault the administration over state department conduct by collecting executive documents congress correspondence and treaty materials He has obtained fisheries disputes with Canada and the Mexican editor’s imprisonment, and is believed to be coordinating with Patrick Ford The effort centers on foreign policy as the main target and a broad array of documents is assembled
The president will not have mail forwarded to him nor will he be available for public business while away. Cabinet officers will handle urgent matters, and he will not permit minute movement details to be released. To satisfy legitimate interest, he arranged for press agencies to relay any noteworthy information.
Report from Wasamneror Crry August 11 says Gray’s original telephone patent application may be reinstated at the patent office opening the case anew independent of court suits. Bell stock fell in Boston amid rumors. Patent Commissioner Montgomery declines to confirm while noting no Gray application or caveat has been recorded recently. A suggested understanding between Bell Telephone and Gray is rumored to be mutually satisfactory.
Secretary Bayard sends Gen. Sedgwick to Chihuahua to review the Cutting case and report in twenty days. The World notes Sedgwick’s limited mission and questions the judge’s recent decision. Washington counts on a wave of naval construction this administration, with several new ships and five steel cruisers named soon. Severe wind and rain in Indiana destroys crops, uprooting trees and damaging corn fields in the upper Wabash valley. floods rise as rain falls heavily.
In Chicago Aug 12, two prosecution witnesses testified in the Anarchist case. Officer Palmer said Schnaubelt spoke English when arrested, undercutting Spies claim he spoke only German. Capt Bonfield noted Spies was verbally harshly treated in German. Prosecution argued conspiracy. defense attacked police integrity and link to bomb plot. Further arguments and expected jury verdict timing referenced.
The court heard that no single piece of evidence would decide the case. it was the total of all materials reviewed. Mr. Ingham had not finished his statement when the court adjourned for the day.
Reports from Milwaukee indicate forest fires remain near prior levels with lingering smoke. In northern Michigan fires are out in many areas, while the northwestern part shows reduced intensity. Green Bay area at risk if high winds return. Suffering is widespread as residents sleep on ground with little clothing. Local meetings are called to marshal relief efforts. Traverse City notes fires encircling the area, police guard streets, and a rainstorm is urgently needed.
PicTssunG Pa Aug 1 A blaze at Park Bros Co Black Diamond steel works destroyed the central building housing valuable machinery. Two hours of effort confined the fire to one structure. Out of 1400 workers only 125 lose 30 days of work. Loss estimated at 1000000 with insurance. Also missing official bond for 25000 of late Gloucester City treasurer A J Green. Bond was in City Clerk Lane's possession who loaned it to Greene.
Kannxakey Aug 1. The state veterinarian shot six glanders affected horses at Watseka and two at Kankakee Illinois. The action targets the diseased animals to prevent spread of glanders in the region.
A Boston surgeon performed an abdominal operation completing in forty five minutes. He opened the abdomen cut the stomach drew out teeth left there for a year and sewed the wound with fine silk. The dates note Monday August 16.
Advices from Alaska report a July meeting in Juneau ordering all Chinese workers at Alaska Mill and Mining on Douglass Island discharged. A 100 miners forcefully loaded eighty six Chinese onto small boats, prepared to ship them to Seattle, but the Idaho captain refused. Amid maneuvers, two schooners were used, boats sailed from Wrangel Island, and the captives wandered near Juneau.
