Washington July 27 to Aug 2 reports summarize Senate and House actions on labor convict investigations pension and fortifications bills. Amendments to deficiencies and land, river and harbor, and inter state commerce measures provoke clashes over funding and policy, with executive sessions and adjournments interspersed among votes and conferees.
Fourth class postmasters were appointed in several states on Thursday. In Chicago a bomb was found at Gilbo Malum grocery, 270 West Erie Street, after a fuse burned out. the blast was aborted. Capt Hathaway handed the device to West Chicago Avenue station.
In Aberdeen Mississippi on July 30 the prohibition campaign is lively with five counties voting dry and five wet. Twenty counties remain to be heard. Negroes mostly oppose prohibition in this state as the campaign continues.
A Belfast Saturday riot saw Orangemen clash with Catholics after a Protestant Sunday school parade. As stones flew and rumors spread, police charged repeatedly. The mob gutted a Catholic tavern, damaged homes, and fired buckshot at officers, leaving many injured.
An elderly woman in Dene, Ohio, asserts she was Ned Buntline's widow and seeks to contest the will that left the property to his longtime spouse of sixteen years. She says she married Judson thirty-five years ago, and he deserted her to join the army and later refused to live with her.
A schooner yacht named Sarah Craig capsized Friday night while sailing from Atlantic City to Long Branch with a Philadelphia party aboard. Missing are Mrs. J. Hi. Stevens and three Stevens family members, two Merritt sisters, Maude E. Retten, and Chester Clark. Survives include Z. W. Jordon, Alfred Potter, Frank W. Hall, Captain Edward Ruland, W. S. Buckley, Charles Ferguson, Lewis Bowman, Samuel Jones, and William Paris. Mrs. Stevens’ body recovered. divers work near the government dock to recover more.
A long list of British cabinet appointments is announced including Thaearl of Iddesleigh as secretary of foreign affairs and Sir Michael Hicks Beach as chief secretary for Ireland. Other key posts feature Lord Randall Churchill as chancellor of the exchequer and Lord Londonderry as prime minister. Additional appointments are noted as decided but not yet official.
A Saturday morning blaze at 8:50 oclock gutted the Indian Orchard Mill No 2 owned by the Millis company in Springfield. The four story, 250 foot long structure burned to ruin with walls collapsing at the east end. Firefighters battled the extensive fire as crews and onlookers watched the inferno from nearby streets.
A morning blaze gutted the Orville H Short carriage works, the city’s largest manufacturer. The fire scorched the plant, destroyed about 3000 wagons and much machinery, with losses around 70000 dollars and insurance about 60000 dollars.
Fire destroyed the large livery and boarding stables of John Laing in Plainreto near Miller's hotel. Several Laing carriages and horses burned. Estimated loss about 50000 dollars with partial insurance.
A narrow gauge freight train toppled into the Wabash river near Bluffton Indiana after a broken span. A brakeman was killed and three other workers injured likely fatally. Buck and Holf and Old Dominion mills in Manchester Virginia burned for about 95000 dollars. a thirty foot snake observed near Yellowstone Lake. building permits in 25 cities total 68000000 dollars. Governor Oglesby and Governor Gray review a parade in Lafayette Indiana. a perpetual injunction blocks The Lumberman publication in Chicago. new National Union officers installed at Mansfield Ohio except Treasurer Gage. further steps needed to dissolve the injunction against Gage.
Chicago August 2. The prosecution opened the anarchist trial with extracts from papers suggesting the aim to reorganize society by force. The defense seeks acquittal for Neebe and plans to prove Fielden, Neebe, Spies, Gilman, Lingg, Engel had no involvement with the bomb plot. They will argue the Haymarket gathering was peaceful and police provoked violence. Mayor Harrison will testify that the meeting was orderly.
In Kansas the trial of a teenage defendant ends with a verdict of murder in the first degree after defense and state summations. The boy’s guardian J P Woods and J W Cosgrove spoke for the defense, while J Q Stratton argued for the state. The defendant awaits a motion for a new trial in jail.
On the board of trade and at union pack yards prices for grain, provisions, and livestock were reported. Wheat and corn futures moved with small changes while oats and rye showed modest shifts. Hog and other live stock prices ranged with active demand for heavy lots and lower light grades. Produce prices included butter, eggs, poultry, and berries with varied per unit and case prices.
