It names REPRESENTATIVE S M Weaver Tows Falls, TREASURER B S Macy Sherman township, CLERK J K Milner Hubbard, etc. It notes city officials and church listings with service times and meeting schedules for Sunday and Thursday evenings.
Washington City April 1 Congress moved on the Indian appropriation bill, opened sessions on executive business, and adjourned after a busy day in both houses. Amendments and debates on tariffs, pensions, and public works followed, with surveys of labor issues on railways and constitutional questions shaping the agenda.
In a Washington letter dated April 14 1890 President Cleveland writes to Senator Jackson Teoo urging him to abandon scruples and accept nomination to the vacant judgeship caused by Judge Baxter's death. He asserts no other aspirant should influence the president and insists the choice is his duty.
The Baltimore and Ohio Switchmen's strike ended Sunday after two objectionable men resigned and five disappeared. Lake Shore officials avoided charging rioters, blaming tramps and roughs. Mrs E E Hatter also removed as inspector.
Master Workman Evans of District Assembly 3 says Knights of Labor will raise between 10,000 and 20,000 for southwestern strikers and begin a boycott of the Western Union Telegraph Company as part of a broader effort against Gould. Businesses are urged to cease patronage. defiant traders will be boycotted.
In St Louis on April 1 a notable improvement in the railway situation occurred with more freight moved than since the strike and additional workers returning as troops guard previously unsecured points. The Belt road faces a manpower gap for trains, while arbitration talks are invited with Missouri Pacific directors. Indictments and bonds touch on tapping telegraph wires and interfering with rail operations. In April 19 dispatches Cheace reports St Louis escaped major strikes while Chicago lines moved. Fifty B&O switchmen walked out over nonunion workers. later seventy seven Lake Shore switchmen joined for the same cause. Reports from St Cloud and Sauk Rapids rise as the tornado death toll grows. An estimated seventy one dead is feared with fifty four in hospital and many more wounded or homeless. Priests lead requiems at the cathedral and Immaculate Conception as mourners travel through wrecked streets amid widespread devastation and charity efforts.
Reports from Sauk Rapids and Rice's Station detail a deadly wedding tragedy and a cyclone that killed and maimed dozens. Funerals and interments followed in Sauk Rapids and St Cloud, with aid from Minneapolis city council and other communities.
April 17 market round shows Wheat active on speculative account with price jumps and gains in May, with note of futures closing higher. Coro in better demand. rigors in oats and rye quiet. provisions and livestock prices listed from Upton yards. multiple regional markets report mixed activity in wheat corn and oats with no uniform direction.
