Homecoming Activities Begin In Eldora This Week
Eldora holds annual homecoming events starting today at the local school. Three senior queen candidates will be chosen by the student body, with final queen chosen by football squad members later. Queen candidates appear atThursday bonfire and snake dance. Pep rally, field decorations, concessions, and a late night dance follow the Eldora-Jesup game. Alumni are invited to the crowning at halftime and the court ceremony is run by the local student council.

Winning Tall Corn Entry Near 16 Ft
The Herald-Index Tall Corn Contest closed Saturday with a 15 feet 114 inches stalk entered by Roger Sparks near Clemons Marshall county. Sparks will receive a trophy at the Eldora Corn Festival Oct 2022. The winning entry was a DeKalb Mexican corn novelty. Second place went to Tom Stanfield Marshall county with 13 feet 3 inch stalk. Other contestants included Homer Cox Edward Mennenga Darrell Bleeker Henry Eckhoff Lewis Jefferson and Roland Hendricks. Stalks are displayed at the Herald-Index office on Edgington Ave.

El Dora junior FFA member and son of Mr and Mrs Pleas Hobson of Eldora bought a $500 Yorkshire boar from Jay Hawk Farms of Deep River Kan. The animal, half brother to a grand champion’s sire at the Austin Minnesota show, comes from Model breeding at Kansas University and will join Hobson's purebred Yorkshire herd of about 20 sows.

Hardin County ASC Office Is Rated No. 1 In State
Obituary notes Fred Kuhfus of Radcliffe died at 73 after a long illness. Services were held at St. John’s Evangelical United Brethren Church in Radcliffe with burial in Radcliffe cemetery. Kuhfus lived in Radcliffe most of his life, married Mae Eller in 1909, and had five children, nine grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. Survivor list includes his wife and five siblings. The same paper also reports Hardin county ASC office in Iowa Falls was named outstanding county ASC office in Iowa for 1960, top in its 14-county district, based on efficiency and service to farmers. A ceremonial banquet is planned Oct. 22 at the Hardin County Youth Building, with a plaque and merit certificates awarded to committee members and staff.

Soft Fish Removal Planned on Iowa River Route
The Iowa River between Hardin City and Steamboat Rock will be treated Tuesday at 8 am by the Iowa State Conservation Commission to eradicate rough fish. Air boats will apply rotenone then a heavier chemical to salvage soft fish, with public access to the catch at Steamboat Rock after 10 am. Restocking with bass, crapples, bluegill, and channel cat is planned this fall.

Eldora Chamber of Commerce outlines a three day Eldora Corn Festival planned for October 20 to 22 with an Indian Corn contest for 40 youngsters. Hardin county vocational agriculture departments from Ackley Alden Eldora Hubbard Iowa Falls Iowa State Training School New Providence and Radcliffe send students to the Hardin County Soil Conservation District sponsored contest at Harold Balvant farm east of Eldora. It opens at 9 a.m. and runs all day with three soil profiles judged per student and top four scorers forming a school team. Individual awards go to the high scorer from each school.
