Polio drive raises 4234 in Hardin County
Hardin County residents contributed at least 4234 to the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis. County drive chairman W. Guenther announced the total on Saturday, with Eldora, Iowa Falls, and Alden sending additional sums and many more gifts likely mailed directly to POLIO at the national headquarters. Iowa Falls reported the heaviest local support amid the 1549 polio epidemic which caused 24 cases and four deaths in the county.

Margaret Landy a 1948 Eldora high school graduate and Grinnell College freshman was chosen for the student council. In high school she held multiple roles including photography editor of the Eldorian secretary of the Thespians class treasurer queen’s attendant and Homecoming selections and was active in Hi-Lites staff art club girls glee club and cheerleaders. Paul Starn of Eldora pleaded guilty to a malicious extortion charge and faced one year in county jail. Hardin County Farms Bureau adopted the 1949-50 program addressing production youth homemaking public policy and farm family welfare. Hardin County real estate valuations for 1949 submitted to the state tax commission show increases over 1948 base figures.

101st Birthday Observed by Mrs. Manning at Hubbard
Matilda Manning marked her 101st birthday with a quiet Hubbard gathering. Born in Boone county, she recalled Civil War era service, Lincoln parade days, and helping war efforts. She married Edgar Manning in 1865, later settled in Hubbard with six children, and remained active in church, clubs, and community life. She has 120 descendants across six children and numerous grandchildren, great and great great grandchildren.

Tax collections for 1949 in Hardin County reached $1,518,702.37 by Sept 30 from a total $1,582,418.31, leaving $63,715.94 to be collected after the deadline. September brought a peak $250,610.27 in taxes with a record day of $101,869.88 including a $49,480.47 Central States Electric Co. check. Last year 95.9 percent were paid before the deadline, compared with 96 percent this year.

Greenleaf Is Named District Treasurer
T. and Greenleaf of Eldora Fri day was named treasurer of Hard in Soil Conservation district. The appointment was made at a meeting of the commissioners. Two boys missing after gym activities at Training school
Robert Olson aged 18 from Jewell and Norman Ellison aged 17 from Mason City were listed as absentees from the Training school Sunday evening after leaving during gym activities.
