New Recreation Area Open To Public In Iowa

Canton-Wine Recreation Area west of Steam boat Rock opens with a 135 acre site, a two story lodge, lake, rifle range, picnic and camping areas, and a 200 seat auditorium. The Iowa River Conservation and Improvement Club funded by a $95,000 Farmers Home loan plans a $150,000 total cost and charges $10 family dues with volunteer labor aiding construction.

Pine Lake edition to be distributed free this summer

Eldera Newspapers will provide free copies of the Pine Lake edition to the public this summer at Pine Lake and the Steamboat Rock Recreation Area. Construction of a 1 acre artificial lake dam began in October with 33 000 yards of dirt fill and a 190 foot wide base. The lake reaches 35 feet deep at points and will use fill from a nearby hill. A temporary retention structure will settle silt before reaching the lake, aiming for long term usability. The ski slope opened in January despite light snow, drawing many skiers and sledders with a 1000 foot run, 110 foot vertical, a 650 foot tow rope, and night illumination.

Pine Lake State Park Offers Diverse Outdoor Activities

Pine Lake State Park and the Iowa River Conservation and Improvement Recreation Area at Steamboat Rock present camping, fishing, boating, swimming, picnicking, and hiking across over 800 acres. Two lakes, Lower Pine and Upper Pine, support sailboats and motors, with cabins, a lodge, bathhouse, and multiple boat ramps. The park, near Eldora, features a variety of facilities and nearby county parks for visitors.
