Eldora Girls Lead In State's Largest Sectional Tournaments

Eldora Tigerettes dominated the state’s largest sectional and district tournaments. Owasa sectional drew 1,017 adults and 2,924 students with $1,401.20 receipts and $770.08 profit. District event in Waterloo netted $4,794.20 on 4,609 adults and 2,230 students, $2,791.33 profit. Royal won Spencer NW district.

Ackley High School Building Targeted for Sept 1956

Ackley school officials expect the new high school to be ready by September 1956. Voters approved a bond issue ten days ago to finance construction. Karl Keffer Associates are the architects, with plans to be presented to the board in three to four months.

4H Enrollment Deadline May 15

Hardin county boys 4-H club members must enroll all livestock and crop projects by May 15. Enrollments must be submitted to the county extension office to be eligible for local and state shows. Pig club members should designate projects as purebred litters market litters or market pig projects. Earmarkings must be included and papers applied for at an early date.

Top Thrift Buck Award To Be $100

The Thrift Buck top prize will be $100 tomorrow, though the usual top award is $560. Chamber secretary Bill Morse stated the number one prize rises to $100, with $25, $10, and $5 awards also planned for Wednesday. Mrs Ivan Frerichs was the sole winner last Thursday afternoon, receiving $50 in Thrift Bucks at Skartvedt Cafe during the 3 p.m. drawing.

Eldora Farm Bureau Meeting Tonight at Community Hall

Eldora Township Farm Bureau will meet today at 8:00 p m at Eldora Community Hall. The program titled How Our Population is Changing is by Kermith Huehn county superintendent. Committee Families include Harvey Freed Harvey Hinshaw Ray McAlister John Heilmich and Roger Peters.

Unanimous Vote Grants Franchise for Iowa Electric

Iowa Electric Light and Power Co. received a standard 25 year electric franchise at Owasa in a 31 0 unanimous vote with 56 possible ballots and no spoiled votes. The franchise is a renewal per Town Electric manager Virgil Schmidt. The May term district court opening moved from May 8 to May 18 with Judge Harvey Uhrenhopp presiding. no jury will be drawn.

Opens Agency At New Providence

BRUGE QEAMPIER, 44, has opened a general insurance agency in New Providence. Clampitt, a New Providence High School and Town State College graduate, brings 12 years of insurance sales experience. He taught vocational agriculture at Iowa State and was a county agent. he holds a 3. S. degree in agriculture. He is married with two children and will operate from his home north of Lawn Hill on highway 299. The Clampitts have returned to the community from Storm Lake.

Who Filched Fred's $25 Ticket

Des Moines court records reveal a missing ticket from Fred Miller's three entries for the Republican dinner on May 11. Tickets numbered 1488 1489 and 1490 were issued. 1488 is absent amid accusations involving courthouse staff and Sheriff Hodgson, with Lucille Long praising the publicity value of the 25 cent plate dinner.

County Home Costs Rise in 1953 In Hardin County

Hardin county ranked fourth in Iowa for weekly cost per inmate in county homes in 1953 at 16.48 dollars. Humboldt, Washington and Crawford counties topped the list among 87 counties operating homes, with 1953 operating costs totaling 16,284 dollars for 19 inmates on average. The period 1950 to 1992 shows weekly per person cost at 13.89 dollars, and costs for caring for the poor outside the home rose to 2.18 dollars that year. Total outside-home care in 1953 reached 48,366 dollars, while 1983 spending on state institutions was 79,141 dollars. Recovered from estates and relatives was 14,824 dollars, with 18.73 percent of expenses repaid.

Enlarging Marshall Plant At Ackley

Extensive repairs are underway at the Ackley plant of the Marshall Canning Co. to provide more facilities for canning a greater number of items. Equipment for Spanish Rice and Macaroni Creole has been moved from Grundy Center and is being installed in the east side of the retort room. A new cement block building is being constructed east of the warehouses to house the machine shop and repair department.

Longtime Owasa school bus driver to retire after 25 years

Mrs Will Reed, wife of Hardin county’s auditor, will make her final Owasa east-route trip this month ending a 25 plus year career with the Owasa school system. She began when her husband held the driving contract and has since driven every Owasa route, earning a Careful Driver’s Award yearly and memories of countless pupils including grandchildren of former riders.

First and Second Graders Receive Polio Vaccine Clinic

Joyce Kiettke became Hardin County’s first child to get the Salk polio vaccine at the Eldora clinic, as 378 pupils total received their first inoculations. Five doctors and several volunteers donated time. second shots due in two to three weeks with limited vaccine supply.

Lay Plains For Driving Club At Eldora High

A teenage driving club was to be organized at Eldora high school with Goron R. Speers from the Iowa safety education division assisting. A 9 a.m. assembly was held. Mac Greene, the driving instructor, led efforts to form the club.

Cook Named To State FFA Office

Lisle Cook, a New Providence high school senior, was named vice-president of the North Central District of the Iowa Future Farmers of America at the State FFA convention in Council Bluffs. He was among 188 boys earning Iowa Farmer Degrees and has held multiple FFA and school leadership roles while producing 30,440 pounds of beef and showing the grand county fair champion.

Eldora Students Win Top Ratings At State Music Contest

Eldora high school vocal and instrumental groups and soloists earned 17 top ratings at the state music contest in Winton. Twelve instrumental awards and soloists and five vocal awards, with instructors Charlea Mahaffey and Leona Froning, led the tally. Top instrumental soloists included Gene Martin, Sharon Kusserow, Gary Lettow, Jim Irwin, Donn Modlin and Tamma Crosley, among others, with numerous ensembles also awarded Division I and II ratings. Vocal soloists Ruth Halasey Kay Grittel and Bob Lamb received top marks, along with multiple vocal and instrumental ensembles in Division I and II categories.

Roscoe Anderson will head the Radcliffe baseball association this summer. He was named at an annual meeting of the association. Other officers named were William Hoffman vice president Herman Hendrickson treasurer AO Reram secretary. Kenneth Hotles is booking the games and Fred Kuhfus is the ticket manager. Kuhfus Anderson and Hendrickson were named to the board for directors at a recent meeting.
