James Brown son of Mr and Mrs R R Brown of Eldora is named winner of a 300 dollar carrier scholarship by the Des Moines Sunday Register and Tribune. Selection rests on scholastic record citizen traits service to customers sales record and money handling. Brown an Eldora high school freshman will receive his pin and certificate at a May 12 banquet in Des Moines two parents and school officials will attend. This marks the third straight year Eldora carriers have won the scholarship with past recipients Rick Barnard and Tim Zimmermann.

A crowd of 150 ladies attended the Hardin County Farm Bureau women rural urban tea Tuesday at the Eldora youth building. The program featured a skit on the farmer’s share of retail prices written by Mrs. Walter Eller, a talk by Mrs. Gordon Stine of Tipton, a style show, and an exhibit tied to the skit theme. Mistress of ceremonies was Mrs. Robert Lettow of Alden with a welcome by Mrs. E. L. Pettenger of Iowa Falls, the county group’s chairwoman.

Hardin County Civil Defense Test Alerts Towns
Fourteen Hardin county cities and towns were alerted in six minutes Friday as part of a nationwide Civil Defense exercise. Sheriff Lowell H. McCormick and staff notified mayors or fire chiefs in the towns using two telephones. Cedar Falls radio relayed the alert to Wardin county. McCormick, under county Civilian Defense director John P. Whitesell, called the test a success.

Flying Cub Membership Drive Starts Today in Eldora
The 1961 Eldora Thunderbird Flying Club membership drive begins today led by committee chair Troy Jones. The club, formed in 1957, has about 200 members. Non pilots pay 1 dollar yearly, licensed pilots and students pay 3 dollars. The group plans an annual fly in breakfast on July 23 at the local airfield, with July 30 as rain date. Meetings are the last Monday each month at Barnard Implement Co. Al Chrisman is president.

Vinton Lowers Gas Talks At New Standard Station
Les Vinton is shown lowering one of three 4,000 gallon gas tanks at the new Standard Oil Service Station on the corner of Edgington Ave and 11th St. Vinton expects to complete the new building in May. The two stall station, 28 by 48 feet, is cement block construction and will be covered with porcelain. The building sits on property owned by Ayerette J. Eldora Musicians Win Top Class B Ratings
Eldora high school musicians earned three Division I ratings and ten Division II ratings at the Class B small groups contest in Tripoli over Friday and Saturday. Instrumental leader Frank Ellington and vocal director Mrs. Leona Froning led a strong showing with three Division I entries in the instrumental department and seven Division II entries among vocal and instrumental groups. Division I entries included Sue Cote on snare drum solo, Anne Longenecker with a bassoon trio, Barbara Burke, Ann Brinkmeyer in another bassoon trio, and a woodwind trio featuring Carolyn Morris, Anne Longenecker and Linda Maltby. Cote’s top snare drum solo marks span four years. Division II vocal groups included the girls sextet Felton Huehn Way Mun singer Short and Catlin, the girls quartet Steinfeldt Christianson Hurst and Simons, and the Madrigal group Felton Steinfeldt Way Christianson Short Hurst Simons. Division II instrumental ratings went to Harrison on timpani solo, Morris with others in clarinet trio, a brass sextet including Farmer Palmer Palmitier and Creps, Huston in sax quartet, Balvant on trombone solo, and Longenecker on bassoon solo.
