Union Iowa Describes Hustling Town with School and Mills
A 1887 feature from Special Correspondent describes Union in Hardin County Iowa as a thriving small town with a top notch high school led by Principal E E McIntire. The Union Roller Mills operated by H S Benson is a major local industry with $11000 remodel. The Union Star weekly, G A R presence, young local businessmen, fire company and state tournament hose team highlight civic life. Population figures from 1865 to 1880 show growth and activity. The piece also recalls the post office to depot horse Gyp and his keeper John Clemons.
