Thirty five men with six binders cut a 28 acre small grain field Friday afternoon for Dores A Jaspers who has been bedbound by illness for nearly a month. The effort drew help from Jaspers' father and uncle from Steamboat Rock, neighbors, friends, and some Union merchants, while Mrs. Jaspers provided cake and drinks.
The Berlin Ladies Aid met Friday afternoon in the church basement with 18 members present. Visitors were Marjory and Vivian Taylor Mrs Helen Crosser and Mrs Mable Brown of St Louis Mo The afternoon was spent sewing carpet rags and the ladies finished setting quilt blocks together for a quilt too Lunch was served. The next meeting will be August 2 with Mrs Emma Grantow and Mrs Esther Polley to serve. At Crater Lake National Park Oregon the angler fishes in an extinct volcano crater for which the area is named.
South Melrose residents host relatives from Eldora Gladbrook and Marshalltown in a busy week of picnics visits and contract signings. Local families D. L Turner Asa Rodd Herman Borke J O Smith and many others hosted or joined gatherings across Gladbrook Conrad Marshalltown and Spillville with travel to Marshalltown for a picnic supper in the park. Hezel Draper left on Sunday for a two week Minnesota vacation.
4 H Country Cousins met at Mrs. George Potgeter's home for plans of a local Achievement Day on August 1 at the schoolhouse. Demonstrations on canning mixed vegetables, courtesy at home, and identifying weeds were given by Louise Finger, Ruth Primus, Lois Jaspers, and Ruth McCaw. Lunch followed.
