DOT Opposes Raising Iowa Interstate Speed Limit
The Iowa Department of Transportation argues against increasing the interstate limit to 65 mph citing more accidents and deaths. Director Victor Preisser notes 10 extra mph could add 136 accidents and five deaths plus 23 million gallons more fuel usage. DOT studies show no shift to other highways and current average speeds on state routes remain about 55 mph.
