Eldora board of education sets February 25 as bid date for new elementary school building. Plans by Brooks and Borg of Des Moines reviewed. final approval awaited after minor corrections. Next Monday night the board will review corrected plans. Three contracts to be bid: general, heating and plumbing, and electrical.

Water Used To Free Girl From Cannon Tongue

A six year old girl named Camille Wiesner of Eldora had her tongue stuck to a courthouse square cannon. Don McMillen of the Herald-Index poured warm water from the courthouse to free her. The child was taken to Eldora hospital for treatment.

Future Teachers Visit Class Here

Twenty future high school vocational agriculture teachers visited the young farmer's evening class on Wednesday night. The group, led by Iowa State College professors Dr. John B. McClelland and C. Bundy, spoke with administrators veterans instructors and local teacher Armand Ruppel during the visit. Bundy formerly taught vocational agriculture at Towa Falls high school.

Car Hits Train at Crossing Injures Two Near Garden City

Two people were hospitalized Sunday afternoon after a car struck a Rock Island Rocket at a railroad crossing a mile and a half south of Garden City. Julie Ann Ollarick 21 of Fort Dodge and James Welss 22 of Charter Oak were involved. Ollarick was listed in serious condition. The crash occurred about 4 30 p m as the eastbound car on a gravel road was demolished.

Deadline Near For El Dora Cribbage Tournament

Entries for the El Dora city cribbage tournament sponsored by the Herald Index close today. Pairings will be announced on Friday. Over 100 Rural Workers Meet at Owasa Kickoff

More than 100 workers will gather in Owasa on February 14 at 8 p m to launch a county youth building drive aiming to raise 1800 dollars. C of C Dinner Meeting Set For March 14

Eldora Chamber of Commerce directors announced Monday March 14 as the date for the annual C of C meeting to be held in the high school gymnasium. Contests and log plans tied to Honest Abs dollar days feature the event with entry blanks available at the Chamber office under the Hardin County Savings Bank. Polio Benefit Dance Set by Whitten Liscomb Units

Last Rites For Mrs Bachman 73 at Hubbard church

Final rites were held for Mrs. Andrew Bachman 73 at Zion Evangelical and Reformed church in Hubbard with burial in Owasa cemetery. She died at her son Basil’s home January 24 and had lived in Hubbard 12 years. Born Lille May Conkin May 4 1881 at Sidney Missouri she married December 25. Surviving husband two sons Basil Hubbard and Mel Lees Summit Missouri one daughter Helen Barnes New Providence five grandchildren and five great grandchildren. two brothers and four sisters also listed.

Cold Night Fires Destroy School and Homes in Hardin County

In sub zero weather four fires in south Hardin county destroyed a Gifford school house and a Jess Cundiff home, badly damaged a tenant house, and scorched a Rex Folkerts farm home. Eldora Union Whitten and Steamboat Rock departments fought blazes from Thursday to Saturday, with losses estimated at about 10 000, firefighters saving furniture and most structures. The Cundiff home near M and L railroad tracks was consumed Thursday morning after hours of effort.

Eldora offers to share facilities with Gifford district

After Gifford grade school burned Saturday night causing $35,000 in losses, Eldora Community School District proposed sharing its facilities with Gifford Independent School District. Supt. Paul Simons said Eldora could accommodate about 30 Gifford students and transfer them if needed. Gifford officials considered temporary facilities and awaited decisions from the Gifford board and county officials.

4-H Clubs Continue To Raise Money For Youth Building

Hardin County 4-H clubs organized bake sales pancake suppers and a pie sale to fund a youth building. Alden Steady Workers raised 23.75 and Alden Clover Climbers 26.43 from a five store bake sale. Pleasant Pluggers netted 119.80 from a pancake supper auction with pies cakes and candy donated by 4-H families. Square dancing closed the auction night as Ralph Bright led the finance drive and other clubs plan similar events.

Two Gifford youths enlist in Navy

Two Gifford youths, Jody Walter Steelman 18 and James Robert Barnes 19, enlisted in the United States Navy last Thursday and were sent to the U S Naval Training Center at Great Lakes Illinois for recruit training. Steelman is the son of Mr and Mrs F Steelman of Gifford and formerly farmed. Barnes is the son of Mr and Mrs C R Barnes of Gifford and was employed by a contractor at Marshalltown.
