Eldora board of education sets February 25 as bid date for new elementary school building. Plans by Brooks and Borg of Des Moines reviewed. final approval awaited after minor corrections. Next Monday night the board will review corrected plans. Three contracts to be bid: general, heating and plumbing, and electrical.
A six year old girl named Camille Wiesner of Eldora had her tongue stuck to a courthouse square cannon. Don McMillen of the Herald-Index poured warm water from the courthouse to free her. The child was taken to Eldora hospital for treatment.
Twenty future high school vocational agriculture teachers visited the young farmer's evening class on Wednesday night. The group, led by Iowa State College professors Dr. John B. McClelland and C. Bundy, spoke with administrators veterans instructors and local teacher Armand Ruppel during the visit. Bundy formerly taught vocational agriculture at Towa Falls high school.
Two people were hospitalized Sunday afternoon after a car struck a Rock Island Rocket at a railroad crossing a mile and a half south of Garden City. Julie Ann Ollarick 21 of Fort Dodge and James Welss 22 of Charter Oak were involved. Ollarick was listed in serious condition. The crash occurred about 4 30 p m as the eastbound car on a gravel road was demolished.
Entries for the El Dora city cribbage tournament sponsored by the Herald Index close today. Pairings will be announced on Friday. Pegging starts immediately with matches, except finals and consolation, at three of five games. finals and consolation are five of seven. Contestants choose their match sites. finals site set. Prizes awarded. This is the 12th annual 1955 city pegging event.
A closing out farm sale is scheduled at the Chester I Brindle farm located one and a half miles south and a quarter mile east of Union. The event starts at 12 30 p m next Friday with auctioneers Reisinger and Heltibridle.
Invitations went to over 500 farmers in Story Hardin and Hamilton counties for the Central Iowa National Farm Loan association annual meeting in Nevada on Wednesday February 9. The session starts at 11 30 with a noon Legion Auxiliary dinner. E W Engelson president of Hubbard will chair. Main speakers are Milo Kinnick Federal Land Bank of Omaha and John R Goldman Social Security Administration manager Des Moines office. Two directors will be elected for three year terms per H R Sapp secretary of the association.
Sub-zero temperatures in Hardin County kept wedding plans on hold last week with no marriage licenses issued by Clerk of Court Fred Miller. The frigid weather paused civil ceremonies as officials reported a blanket freeze across the region.
Word has been received of the death of Howard C. Miller 67 former Eldora resident at his home in Los Altos California He was born in New Providence and lived in Eldora many years He was the son of Ambrose and the late Mrs Miller Also surviving are his wife Mertha Kimball Des Moines and a daughter Mrs George H Williams of Los Altos California.
More than 100 workers will gather in Owasa on February 14 at 8 p m to launch a county youth building drive aiming to raise 1800 dollars. Rev Ralph Imes of El Dora Congregational church leads as principal speaker with Maurice Cook Ralph Bright and Cecil Rooks also addressing attendees. A Q and A period follows along with colored slides of a 4 H building in Fort Dodge and photos of the Hardin county fair grounds barracks.
Dr. R W Burke of Strawberry Point is assisting in Eldora in the offices of Drs D M Nyquist and John Shorts until Nyquist returns from Iowa City. Nyquist underwent surgery last week and will resume duties thereafter.
Eldora Chamber of Commerce directors announced Monday March 14 as the date for the annual C of C meeting to be held in the high school gymnasium. Contests and log plans tied to Honest Abs dollar days feature the event with entry blanks available at the Chamber office under the Hardin County Savings Bank. Secretary Bill Morse said entries will be accepted up to and on contest day. Three C of C members Lew Throssel Virgil Schmidt and Morse will attend the Midwest Industrial Development convention in Des Moines this week. On the overseas front A/2e W B Van Derveer of Eldora heads to Hahn Germany to join the United States 12th Air Force. He is listed at APO 109 PM New York NL.
In the cold pre-dawn at Hardin County fairgrounds Frank Crippen drives a racehorse around the track as he has for years. He rises at 4:30, tends to horses, and explains the training routine from jogging the wrong way to build speed to miles needed before racing. He recalls past winters, equipment, and his racing family including Gertie, Stan-O, Dave Frisco, Donna Star, and Sun Time. Ed Lee helps at Ames, while Crippen’s past as a school bus driver is noted.
The Whitten volunteer fire department and Liscomb American Legion sponsor a polio benefit dance in the Liscomb Legion hall Friday. Two orchestras will perform modern music and square dancing. Ticket sales competition pits Whitten and Liscomb to raise funds for Hardin county polio fund and Marshall county polio fund.
Hardin county Easter Seal publicity chairmen Mc Wallace Martin says the Easter Seal drive is the most effective campaign ever, running March 10 to Easter Sunday. The statewide effort aligns with a synchronized national entrance spanning 48 states plus DC and territories. W Earl Hall of Mason City is named Iowa State Easter Seal Chairman alongside Harold Benson of Sioux City, head of the Iowa Society for Crippled Children.

Eldora High girls basketball set a new school mark by routing McCainlsburg 64 to 17 to cap an undefeated regular season and reach 18 wins. The previous best 18–1 record was held by the 1945–46 squad. Full game story on Page 5.
Final rites were held for Mrs. Andrew Bachman 73 at Zion Evangelical and Reformed church in Hubbard with burial in Owasa cemetery. She died at her son Basil’s home January 24 and had lived in Hubbard 12 years. Born Lille May Conkin May 4 1881 at Sidney Missouri she married December 25. Surviving husband two sons Basil Hubbard and Mel Lees Summit Missouri one daughter Helen Barnes New Providence five grandchildren and five great grandchildren. two brothers and four sisters also listed.

The Hardin County Rural Young People's Club will send its officers to a district leadership training program in Arces today. Delegates include president Howard Klemime and others from Hubbard Eldora and Radcliffe. Officials will hear on basic needs and organizing group activities, followed by small group discussions and a recreation party to close.

In sub zero weather four fires in south Hardin county destroyed a Gifford school house and a Jess Cundiff home, badly damaged a tenant house, and scorched a Rex Folkerts farm home. Eldora Union Whitten and Steamboat Rock departments fought blazes from Thursday to Saturday, with losses estimated at about 10 000, firefighters saving furniture and most structures. The Cundiff home near M and L railroad tracks was consumed Thursday morning after hours of effort.
Graham’s store hosts a fashion show next Saturday featuring five high school home economics students Sue Brown Harbara fairs Betty Hobson Carol Harrington and Nancy Heslop. The display includes four outfits cut from fabrics stocked by Graham stores. Mrs Margaret Durran will supervise. Two showings at 2 and 3 p.m with a platform in the store and coffee and donuts served.
Mrs. Ed Davis 84 a former Eldora resident died of a heart attack at her Des Moines home early Thursday She had been Lois Farr before marriage and lived in Des Moines since 1905 Immediate survivor is her husband a brother of the late Aymer Davis of Eldora Services were held in Des Moines Burial took place at Eldora cemetery
After Gifford grade school burned Saturday night causing $35,000 in losses, Eldora Community School District proposed sharing its facilities with Gifford Independent School District. Supt. Paul Simons said Eldora could accommodate about 30 Gifford students and transfer them if needed. Gifford officials considered temporary facilities and awaited decisions from the Gifford board and county officials.
Hardin County 4-H clubs organized bake sales pancake suppers and a pie sale to fund a youth building. Alden Steady Workers raised 23.75 and Alden Clover Climbers 26.43 from a five store bake sale. Pleasant Pluggers netted 119.80 from a pancake supper auction with pies cakes and candy donated by 4-H families. Square dancing closed the auction night as Ralph Bright led the finance drive and other clubs plan similar events.
Two Gifford youths, Jody Walter Steelman 18 and James Robert Barnes 19, enlisted in the United States Navy last Thursday and were sent to the U S Naval Training Center at Great Lakes Illinois for recruit training. Steelman is the son of Mr and Mrs F Steelman of Gifford and formerly farmed. Barnes is the son of Mr and Mrs C R Barnes of Gifford and was employed by a contractor at Marshalltown.
