Record-Setting 1960 Hardin County 4-H Livestock Sale
One of the state’s best fairs highlighted by a grand champion 616 pound Shorthorn sold for 75.50 per hundredweight to Girard’s Super Valu. A total of 225 baby beeves brought 57,605.96 dollars, averaging 26.74 per cwt, with jumbo prices and strong local buyers from Eldora, Hubbard-Ferian, and other area firms. The event set a high-water mark for calf prices at the county fair auction.

Mrs Iva Reece 68 of New Providence died Sunday at Eldora Memorial Hospital. Funeral services were held August 23 at 10 am from New Providence Friends Church with Rev John Baxter officiating. Burial followed in Boonville North Carolina. Survivors: two daughters Frances Juncker of Des Moines and Colleen Willian of New Providence. Husband Ed Reece preceded her in death. Fair Attendance Holds Steady at Hardin County Fair
Rain-dampened four day event drew about 10,500 attendees not counting season tickets or exhibitors, slightly below 1959 and near 1938 figures. Homer Cox of Eldora raised a new high in the Tall Corn contest with a 12 ft 114 in stalk, surpassing last week’s 12 ft 2 in record held by Darrel Bleeker of Steamboat Rock. Edward Mennenya, a Grundy county farmer near Steamboat Rock, now stands second with 12 ft 8 in. the contest remains open and plaques will be awarded.

Gerhardt Kramer and Don Schuneman of Steamboat Rock and Ken Brandt of Hubbard won top honors at the Hardin County Fair tractor pull. A large crowd watched from the grandstand as Kramer won the heavyweight runoff pulling the full length of the 300 foot track. Missile train visits Eldora amid defense exercise
A mobile missile train halted in Eldora for several hours Sunday afternoon as Strategic Air Command and partners conduct a test showing how future missile trains could operate on existing tracks. The 13 car train carried 32 military personnel and 10 civilians with a full amenities suite and a launch car. Local authorities coordinated with SAC to reassure residents during the demonstration overseen from Hill Air Force Base Utah.
