Riots and wreckage mark storm toll near Radcliffe
A tornado-like storm swept southwest of Radcliffe causing massive ruin. A three month old girl, daughter of Mr and Mrs Arthur Neubauer, was swept from her foundation and found in a stubble field after more than 100 workers searched through the night. The Neubauers were seriously injured. A threshing crew sought shelter in a basement as seventeen people huddled in a tiny space when the wind lifted the house. Mrs Thorenson was pinned under a rock but not seriously hurt. Surrounding farm buildings including those of Carl Engelking Carl Faust Hy Arnsmeier Henry Meier Shaffer and Lettow were destroyed. Eleanor Steinberg was elected state treasurer of the American Legion Auxiliary. Darlene Friedman, 3, of Forest City was fatally injured when the truck she rode collided with a northbound freight train at a crossing. Benjamin Bowman, 4, thought the oldest man in Hardin County, died at his step-daughter’s home. 1938 and 1948 items note area school openings birthdays and local happenings.
