Easter Coloring Contest Opens Across Eldora Area

The Eldora merchants sponsor an Easter coloring contest starting today. Full page colorings, rules on page six, cash prizes of 2 for under 6 and 8 to 11 categories, plus an Easter basket for the best in each of 14 ads. Entries due by 12 noon Saturday April 13 at the Herald-Index office. Winners displayed at sponsor stores April 17 and prizes collected April 20. Open to any child 11 or younger with the full page colored.

Eldora Goodyear Store Marks 10th Anniversary Sale

The Eldora Goodyear Service store celebrates ten years with three big prizes free ham sandwiches and coffee on Saturday. The anniversary sale will be full of bargains. Hardin County Republican Women's Council plans to visit the Iowa Legislature Monday April 8, and hold a luncheon at the State House at noon followed by an afternoon tea for Lieutenant Governor and Mrs. William Nichol and Senator and Mrs. John Walker.

Information And Applications For Growing Certified Seed Available

Farmers in Hardin county may obtain application blanks and certification handbooks from the extension office in Eldora, or request via the Iowa Crop Improvement Association. Separate blanks exist for five crop groups, with needs for each field, and deadlines by crop. Fields must be near weed-free, isolated from similar crops, and use foundation to certified seed. crops undergo field and bin inspections. Rooks and Murray Named Typical 4-Hers at Eldora Night

John Rooks of Eldora and Linda Murray of New Providence were chosen as Hardin County typical 4-H boy and girl at the 4-H Family Fun Night in Eldora. More than 400 people attended the event featuring voting, square dancing and folk dancing. The same week April 15 is declared clean up week by Eldora Chamber of Commerce with local merchants offering bargains on cleaning items paint and home improvement goods.

Hartman Rites At Steamboat Rock

Funeral services were held Saturday at Steamboat Rock for Orlo Hartman age 57 who died March 29 at his Phoenix Arizona home where he had gone for health reasons. Pallbearers included Harley Faust Robert Rasmussen Franklin Lee John Hanson Mayo Skart vedt and Dean Folkerts. Flowers were arranged by Mrs William Trampe and Mrs Dean Folkerts. He is survived by his wife two sons three daughters and three brothers.

Eldon Gohner Dies In Wellsburg

Eldon Gohner, a Wellsburg school bus driver, died at his home early Monday. Arrangements for his funeral were pending at press time, to be set after his brother Harry arrived from California later Monday.

Eldora Bearcats 4-H win county basketball title

John Rooks of Eldora Bearcats 4-H was chosen over three rivals Richard Hankom of Alden Steady Workers Roger Williams of Hardin Stockmen and Merle Cox of Pleasant Pluggers. Linda Murray of New Providence is a Providence Pearls member with finalists Mary Ellen Durbin Grant Go-Getters Nancy Lou Pfeil Sherman Stars and Joan Tysdahl Concord Claverettes. Jackson township 4-H club earned the trophy as county champion by beating Pleasant Pluggers Thursday night in Owasa.

New Providence Civic Club Trophy for Scout Finance Drive

The New Providence Civic Club led a three county area by achieving 33 percent community support in the Boy Scout financial drive, earning a two foot traveling trophy for sponsoring the Scouts. Members include Jim Clemons, Clift Lindaman, Jess Broer, Paul Taber, Bernard Hadley, Lloyd Wallace, Reece, Ben Quaife, Edgar Perry, Gary Hadley and Roger Horn. Also listed are upcoming April farm and 4-H events in Eldora Township, Girl Scout and district meetings, and training schools through April 11.

Kindergarten Registration Set For This Friday

All children planning to enter Kindergarten next fall should come to Eldora elementary building rooms 2 and 2 on Friday April 5. Registration runs 9 to 11 am and 1 to 3 pm. A child must be five by November 15 to be eligible. Please notify others with eligible children.

To Let Contracts On Farm To Market Roads April 30

County engineer Wray Furlong announced contracts will be let on three farm-to-market roads April 30. Over seven miles of resurfacing planned this year include 14 miles at Wilke, four miles south of Gifford, and about two miles in Providence township from the Marshall county line north. Contracts for 25 culvert exterior and repairs expected at the same time.

Iowa Welfare Association To Meet At Fayette

The Iowa Welfare Association northeast chapter spring meeting will be held April 12 at Fayette for welfare workers and interested attendees. The conference theme is our common goals with workshops on fighting poverty preventing illness preventing maladjustment and enriching leisure time. William P. Werner of Winona Minnesota will lead the fighting poverty workshop. Allen Memorial Hospital administrator Thomas Frey will head the combatting illness workshop aided by Thea Sandel of University Hospitals at Iowa City. Preventing maladjustment will be led by Waverly Paris Linn County juvenile court mental health consultant, with Margaret Cothorn Des Moines recreation council secretary assisting the leisure time workshop.

Lovie Darzes Celebrates 40th Anniversary of Candy Making

Eldora businessman Louis Darzes marks 40 years in candy making with celebratory offerings from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday including free coffee, ice cream cones for children, cigars for men, and favorite candy for ladies. He arrived from Zara-forna Greece at 17, worked in Chicago, learned candy making in Sioux City, opened stores in Indianola and Eldora, and has operated in Eldora since 1917 with multiple ventures and staff, including Mrs. Mable Roblin, Alyina Wood, and Lena Harms.

Uhlenhopp Plan Approved By Iowa Bar Association

The Iowa State Bar Association chaired by R R Bateson approved the Uhlenhopp committee plan for a unified trial court and two-level judiciary including an administrative chief judge for multi county areas. The plan requires a constitutional amendment and would replace existing courts with a unified system. Shirley Webster and L L Corcoran were nominated for leadership posts. A 1969 report by Clarence Kading will guide future decisions.

Former Eldoran public safety pioneer Karl Fischer dies

Services were held at Vinton Saturday for Karl Fischer 60 a former Eldora resident. He died Wednesday in the federal domiciliary unit at Clinton In 1939 he was Iowa's first state public safety commissioner and was a one time leading Republican.

Zoske Fined Three Hundred On OMVI Charge In District Court

William Bruno Zoske of Town Falls was fined 300 dollars and costs for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated when arraigned before Judge John M. Schaupp in district court here Wednesday. Zoske was arrested by highway patrolmen on Highway B between Iowa Falls and Aldem Sunday evening.

Iowa Employment Up Over February 1956

Iowa employment rose sharply in February compared with February 1956, with estimates from the Employment Security Commission showing about 250 more workers on Iowa payrolls. The average workweek shortened by 42 minutes year over year and 12 minutes from the prior month, with glass and clay industries recording the largest cutback to 41.2 hours.

Eldora Sees Modest Jump in 1956 Third Quarter Sales

Eldora posted a modest rise in total retail sales for July through September 1956, highlighted by $34,224.70 in tax returns, an over $4,000 increase over the prior year. Countywide, third quarter sales rose slightly, offset by rural declines. several comparable towns show varied gains and losses, with Grundy Center and Eldora among the increases.
