Principal C R Shiffler says Austin school enrollment has topped 1000 for the first time, more than its 600 design. To balance classes, six seventh grade sections shift to arrive an hour late and depart an hour late while Bandmaster L A Kirchner leads lessons in the furnace room.
Austin high school students with grades 90 or above and enrolled in at least four subjects are urged to join clubs. An honor club will be selected after six weeks, and organization of other clubs begins next week. Each student should belong to at least one club, but not more than two.
H B Fort, former El Paso High assistant principal, will begin a night high school this fall at the Vocational school. Classes run 7 to 9 p.m. this year with two courses offered per student and a $5 to $7.50 monthly tuition. Public speaking is expected to be popular. Enrollment aims for 50.
An old report notes R O T C cadets at El Paso High School were ordered to clear rocks from the stadium. The field is being refurbished this summer for football and military drill, with the effort described as part of preparations.
El Paso sculptor Edmund Senn will teach art classes to talented local students from lower grades to high school. Mrs. Nell Stockwell directs the program with pupil selection by teachers and principals. Credit will be given for the course. Senn also to teach commercial design at night high school. The annual soap sculpturing contest moves to spring, sponsored by Proc tor Gamble Co. Winners enter the national contest in New York next May. last year's winner was Salvador Aceves.
Jacob Goldberg a 12 year old seventh grader at Beall school won third prize in a highway safety essay contest by the state highway commission. He receives a bronze medal and five dollars. His essay was entered in a national contest. Miss Ann Fincher Alta Vista won honorable mention for her highway safety lesson outline.
Enrollment at Dudley rose to 234 when classes began midweek and is expected to reach 250 after all students report. Three unused rooms from last year are in use this year, and the gain in attendance is tied to expanded Kern Place facilities according to Supt. A. H. Hughey’s office.
Maj. W. H. Henderson announces Bowie High will organize an R O T C class after schedules are set. Uniforms for 500 boys are ready and an armory will be provided. The program may run in the afternoon, joining El Paso High and Austin High units totaling about 400 students. Lafayette Sexton, new instructor, will aid at El Paso, Austin, and Bowie units after arriving from the University of Iowa. He has nine years of R O T C experience and has bought a home in El Paso.
Students return to Paso schools to find new sani tary drinking fountains at Alamo and Bailey and interior upgrades at Douglas worth over 2500 dollars. All schools repainted. El Paso High gets electric refrigerator and dishwasher. Crockett adds a compact steam table, expanding cafeteria capacity. Mrs. Brown leads Crockett’s cafeteria to save funds for the library. Other campuses also upgrade cafeterias. Asst Supt Jones notes about 5000 pupils eat daily.
Miss Lucy Hoard appointed primary supervisor in the schools. W. A. Stigler to supervise grade work and R. R. Jones to oversee high school work.

Edw Celeman, student president, says El Paso High plans to host the Southwestern Student Government convention in the fall. Last year the event occurred in Phoenix with El Paso delegates including Ray Lockhart. This year organizers seek delegates from New Mexico Arizona El Paso California and southwestern Texas.
Attendance at El Paso High School reached 1760 on Wednesday with 1800 forecast by Friday. Lawrence McConachie, attendance clerk, notes the year to date is slightly higher than last year when 1728 students were in attendance.
Bowie school's night community center resumes activities next week under Principal A. L. Carlton. The center runs 7 to 9 p m daily with Cordova directing athletics in the auditorium and indoor games in the halls boxing and wrestling in classrooms the library open for study Mrs Alma Bartlett in charge attendance reaches about 200 Prim Carlton said
Student affairs at Bowie are managed by a council of boy students elected from home rooms of grades six through the third year of high school. They gather student opinion and present ideas to the principal. elections are scheduled for next week.
El Paso's junior high schools Bowie and Austin receive athletic upgrades this year. Austin adds a shower and locker room aiding coach Luther Cobleniz. Bowie powers up with a five acre field planned to be leveled and sodded next year with bleachers hoped for.
Forty teacher desks twenty bookcases and sixty new tables were added to public school equipment this summer through work by the woods working departments of Vocational and El Paso High schools.
A Crippled Children's Altura school adds lawn and garden care to pupil activities started last summer. Twenty seven registered initially. some may move to regular or vocational schools. Teachers include Asst. Supt. R. R. Jones Mrs. Minnie Brain and Mrs. May Barton. Meals are shared daily with Grace before meals. Phonographs provided for crippled and blind pupils through El Pasoans’ response to H. B. Fort appeal.
