Early returns indicate William McKinley widening lead in electoral votes while William Jennings Bryan trails, signaling an imminent Republican victory. Voter sentiment favors McKinley in key states as results trickle in from major counties and districts.
The dispatches report McKinley with at least 292 electoral votes and gains in Kentucky New York and Pennsylvania while Bryan carries Alabama Arkansas Colorado Florida Georgia Idaho Louisiana and other states. Republicans claim majorities in Congress and several states with Nevada and North Dakota results still unsettled. Lincoln Nebraska results show Bryan decisively defeated and fusionist gains in legislature and governorship races.
Early results show Marcus Smith Democrat leading Murphy Republican for Arizona governor with a small margin and eventual clarity expected tonight. Jerome delivers a surprise small Smith lead, while Murphy loses miners union support over bullion tax fears. Nationally Bryan gains in Massachusetts but loses the state. New Jersey and Wyoming tilt Republican. Missouri, Mississippi, California show party shifts. seven Republicans win Congress seats and state legislature.
Texas reports indicate a solid Democratic sweep with two hundred thousand majority anticipated for Bryan. In the eleventh and twelfth districts Crouch and Drake were badly beaten, while Burgess leads in Galveston with strong county support. City contests show votes bought at the polls, and overall quiet, fair weather voting across the state.
In San Antonio on November 7 the appellate court affirmed the judgment in C. H. Lawrence versus C. Aguirre of El Paso. The court reversed and rendered Geo. H. Mechan and Son versus Geo. F. Hubbard of El Paso.
