Andrew Carnegie to Address Iron and Steel Institute Banquet

Andrew Carnegie will deliver the principal address at the Iron and Steel Institute banquet at the Cecil Hotel. He will stay briefly in London before a six month rest in Scotland. Carnegie advocates building a merchant marine through favorable congress legislation and prefers expanding merchant ships over naval battles. He predicts ongoing prosperity for iron and steel ventures this year.

St. Louis Streetcar Strike Fails To Move

In St Louis by May 9 there was no change in the streetcar strike as authorities and the railway company agreed not to run cars. The night police were sent home after a full night on duty. A suburban car was wrecked by explosives and Cleveland reports say hundreds of workers will be dumped into St Louis tomorrow.

Peoria May 9 The second day of the Republican convention drew an immense crowd. Mrs. R. Tanner appeared on the platform. Joseph W. Rush to Nome Tacoma May Day Stampede Surges

The spring rush to Cape Nome accelerates with five steamers already sailing to St. Michael and Cape Nome along with eight schooners and barks carrying lumber and coal. By May 25 at least forty steamers and twenty five sailing vessels from Tacoma San Francisco and Seattle are expected to depart for Nome.
