Delay in Santiago assault due to supply line bottleneck

In Playa del Este on June 29 for Kingston June 30 reports say subsistence commissaries lagging as roads fail. Engineers with pacificos have built bridges and a military road clearing the way for trains to reach the front. Shafter will not assault until three days of rations are carried. Signal corps telegraph keeps Wheeler and Shafter in close contact.

Watsons Eastern Squadron to Bombard Spain

Assistant Secretary of the Navy Allen announced that Watsons eastern squadron will sail for Spain on Monday and begin bombardment within three weeks as coal operations continue day and night along the coast of Spain.

Shafter Reaches Front As Troops Invest Santiago

General Shafter arrived at Wheeler's HQ after a three hour march and ordered immediate occupation plans. He departed at 3 o clock aboard the Segurance with Lieuts Miley and McClenna. Cuban outposts near Santiago report a stone building held by 50 Cubans three miles from the city. Red cross flags appear in town while deserters praise troop health. Cable line to Siboney restored and a telegraph office opened there.

Roosevelt Rough Riders Capture Spanish Spy From Tree

Roosevelt's rough riders captured a Spanish spy found up a tree taking notes of the American camp. He was handed to Cuban authorities who shot him and beheaded him. The spy was identified as a pacifico. Miss Clara Barton arrived with two surgeons and nurses to aid wounded soldiers. Sergeant Elwell of the Second Infantry died from heat prostration.

Hong Kong reports unease as Wing Foo, a seventy ton dispatch boat carrying urgent Dewey dispatches, remains missing after a storm. Commanded by Thomas Evins of Niagara Falls, the vessel sailed from Dewey and was due to arrive yesterday.
