The graduation exercises conferred the degree of L L D on Mr Cockran by Rev John D Whitney acting for the university. He is the second to receive an honorary LL D not given under the usual condition. Georgetown first awarded an honorary LL D at its centennial ten years ago to Thomas F Bayard then secretary of state.
Denver June 22 The smelter labor strife nears closure as work resumes soon in all plants. The remaining conflict centers on how rates are set with individual smelters seeking separate agreements. President Nash is expected to arrive to finalize the terms.
Washington June 22 Secretary Dick of the Republican National Committee said the committee meeting will not be held until next December. Denver is the only city to file a request and will be considered when the convention city is chosen. The city must provide a suitable auditorium quarters and ample hotel accommodations.
Governor Roosevelt leaves Albany with a party for Las Vegas to attend the first annual Rough Riders reunion starting next Saturday. Senator Murphy acts as governor in Roosevelt’s absence. Lieutenant Governor Woodruff is away in Europe, so the senate Republican leader carries the duties.
In Wardner Idaho the army order restricting local officers from intervening beyond riot control is ignored. Hunter mine officials are ordered to force union workers to sign permits, a move opposed by the superintendent who faces possible punishment. Tensions rise as Negro troopers reportedly insult white women and a miners trial for murder and arson begins at Wallace.
Ex Comptroller James E. Eckels in Chicago says Bryan will likely be renominated in 1900 and the Chicago platform with free silver as the dominant issue will be reaffirmed. He argues Bryan will be defeated and his collapse will restore Democratic principles and a conservative path.
June 22. General Wheeler will be sent to the Philippines to inspect the army under General Otis. He will not take part in operations and will report to the War Department before Congress meets, then resign his commission.

A Denver syndicate of local capitalists completed the purchase of fifteen hundred acres of placer ground on the San Juan river in Utah for nearly a quarter of a million dollars. A modern plant capable of thousand yards daily is being assembled in Denver and will be shipped next month.
Nel lis Slavin a stenographer at the National Bank of Commerce Wichita Kansas was found dead in a bank chamber by a bullet wound with a revolver beside her The death followed a doctor advising her to make a will due to consumption but no explanation of the act was given

Spanish View dispatches from Madrid report the American situation in Manila worsening due to losses and disease. Fresh troops are described as badly needed to sustain operations and offset mounting disability.
Spaniards in Santiago announce a special mass on July 3 to honor sailors of Cervera's squadron who died when Spanish warships were destroyed by the Americans. They requested permission to display the Spanish flag, which was granted and they will be protected by military authorities.
On the surface the Cleveland street railway strike remains unchanged. Obstructions to tracks were set during the night and a wrecking crew continued hindering traffic on the few lines attempting to run. No blood was shed during the evening or night.
The parents of William Sloan Jr arrive from Buffalo and disinherit their son after he eloped with Rose Lincoln Edwards of Cambridge while guests waited for the wedding to a friend. The Sloan family is described as very wealthy.
The Second Immunes, mainly Louisiana and Texas men, were mustered out at Camp Meade. Only the 19th Regular Infantry remains at the camp.
Social circles report Miss Mary Goelet will marry Prince Henry of Orleans. The prince is famed explorer and popular with the French, and is wealthy.
Evansville June 22 miners strike continues with no incidents. The departure of the African American workers from the Sunnyside mine has led to its closure for an indefinite period.
In Safford town the day featured a string of departures and returns. T. H. Booz Jr of Sabinal visited, A. Lathrop left for Los Angeles, J. H. Fredricks headed to Denver, Miss Eula Graham enjoyed Alamogordo, and Mrs. K Talbot returned from the ranch. S F Dubbs arrived from Casas Grandes, C E Quivey went to Las Vegas, Harry Borcherding journeyed to Alamogordo, Mrs Sprint and son Harry visited Las Vegas, U S Surveyor R L Powell from Silver City was in town, Mr and Mrs Henry Pfaff returned from Denver, J T Logan traveled to Casas Grandes on business, T Ek Hunt arrived from the west, Hiram Hadley came home on the Santa Fe, and J S Morrison, Santa Fe city ticket agent, was away on the same line.

In Crawfordsville Indiana on June 22 the jury found Alfred Wells guilty of murder but found him not responsible for his acts when he threw his four little boys into a well killing two. A commission in lunacy will be held this morning and Wells will be taken to an asylum.

Warranted Juarez saloon owners face a tax of 120 dollars Mexican per year plus 30 percent on all beer not brewed in Chihuahua. Major brewers San Antonio Brewing Association and Deter and Sauer face 5 000 dollars plus 30 percent. Ketelsen and Degetau taxed 2 000 plus 30 percent. Dealers met at 3 30 P M to oppose the new law and consider ceasing beer sales rather than sell Chihuahua product.
Ann J. Warren transfers lot 14 block 11/4 Campbell's 8250 to Solomon M. Good man. The Scottish American Mortgage Co. sells 31 acres partly in El Paso and Jeff Davis counties to M. E. Williams for 10500 dollars.
A building permit issued to William M. Price authorizes the erection of a $2090 brick residence on lots 1 and 2, block 262, at the corner of Idaho and Ochoa.
Bill Taylor, the outlaw figure, appeared on the Juarez extradition application. The outcome of the hearing was not disclosed to the public.
Superintendent E Benjamin Andrews of Chicago public schools has insured his life for 10000 dollars to benefit a pension fund for teachers. He named the fund as residuary legatee and urges other Chicago school officials to follow suit.
