Report from Key West on June 4 says the Vizcaya was disabled and captured after attempting to leave the harbor to attack the U S fleet. The ship was boarded as guns were silenced and Cristobal Colon and others driven back. Source details are unverified.
In Madrid on June 4 observers split over American calls for an honorable peace with Spain. The press shows hostility toward mediation, arguing it shirks costs, while financial circles consider mediation possible if Spain’s pride is respected. Rumors of peace gain confirmation as Ceirro pledges an honorable solution.

Portland June 4 The torpedo boats Davis and Fox under construction at Wolff and Zwicker shipyards are to be completed within two months. The Davis was launched today and the Fox will be christened two weeks hence. Work began fourteen months ago with government supplies arriving on schedule.
Washington reports Rear Admiral Sampson ordered the collier Merrimac sunk to block Santiago harbor and seal the Spanish fleet inside. No lives were lost. Dispatches cite a plan for a combined land and sea assault once troops arrive, with bombardment to force surrender. Madrid notes Spanish batteries damaged two American ironclads and hails a Spanish victory.
A Mobile report says several transports carrying troops sailed this morning under sealed orders. The Second and Third cavalry and Twelfth infantry were listed as aboard. In Mobile crowds of twenty thousand cheered as the departure occurred with three troops of the Second cavalry aboard and others staying on ships overnight.
Adjutant General Barry received a telegram from Secretary Alger confirming acceptance of the third Nebraska volunteer infantry organized by W. J. Bryan. The unit will join the Philippines contingent and Bryan was appointed colonel with commission issued after a conference with Gov. Holcomb.
The Monterey with the collier Brutus leaves Monterey tonight bound for Honolulu then Manila. The ship carries 100 tons of coal and will travel under steam to Honolulu before being towed to Manila. Expected to reach Manila in about five weeks.
A dynamite bomb six inches long and two inches wide was mailed to Mayor Van Wyck, discovered near City Hall in New York. No damage occurred and no injuries reported.
The Tribune bulletin from Cape Haytien states a prevalent report that the Americans destroyed the Spanish fleet at Santiago yesterday but notes the report is unconfirmed.
MADRID June 4 Blanco telegraphs from Havana that quarrels between insurgent leaders Garcia and Gomez fuel belief Gomez will lead his forces against the Americans.
Montreal June 24 Detective Gellert was acquitted this morning of stealing a letter from Lieut Carranza's residence. Magistrate La Fontaine ruled there was insufficient evidence for detention. The case involved Carranza's spy bureau network in Montreal.
After the senate met, the war revenue bill was taken up. With no amendment pending, a vote on passage was called. A roll showed forty six senators present, meeting quorum. Morgan offered an amendment to enforce the 1894 income tax sections, which failed by three votes.
Ensign J R Blakely reported among crew captured near Santiago when the Merrimac sank. He is nephew of John Russell Young, librarian of Congress, and James R Young, congressman from Philadelphia. His father is John Blakely of the Philadelphia Evening Star.
The report says congress may adjourn early so members can return home by July 4. If that happens, measures such as the census, bankruptcy, anti scalping, railroad pooling, and other important items would be postponed to the winter session.
A white private Ervrane Jacobs from Waxahachie Texas was asked to salute by a black officer in Mobile. The officer was removed on a stretcher. Regulars express support for Texans and have serenaded them several times.
San Francisco dispatch notes on June 4 that Colorado volunteers were ordered to embark for China, with the excerpt indicating a planned departure occurring on Tuesday.
The minister of marine, Senor Aunon, said Admiral Cervera’s message dated yesterday expresses thanks for government congratulations and makes no reference to any recent events.
