Reports from July 6 to July 9 describe Chinese attacks on allied forces at Tien Tsin with twelve guns and naval support from the British cruiser Terrible. Foreign troops countered, missions in Shang Tung destroyed, and international relief efforts debated as fleets sail to China.
The St Louis Transit Company and unionized employees announce terms of settlement restoring the March 10 1900 pay and hours policy. Discrimination bans exist for union involvement and any intimidation triggers discharge. The former employees list led by T B Edwards will select future hires until exhausted.
A special term of Scott county circuit court convened in Georgetown for the murder trial of Youtsey Combs Whittaker Powers and Davis. W H Culton testified that Youtsey said Governor Taylor offered money to leave the state, while Youtsey denied the offer but said someone would fund his departure. Culton to be star Commonwealth witness.
A Mexican deposited a large Babbitt metal brick with E Sambrano and was loaned 650. The mass was claimed to be silver. two locals then offered to redeem it for its owner and pay $10 in advance. They ended up paying $16.50 for a brick likely worth 65 cents.
A delegation of Texas sheriffs and their families traveled through San Antonio today en route to El Paso for the state convention. The march underscores the gathering of law enforcement leaders from across the state.
Election day report from Old Mexico says Diaz ahead with a 70 delegate convention. Juarez contributed 12 delegates from four districts as Joaquin Redo is chosen senator and Jesus E Valenzuela named congressman. Supreme court justices to be elected tomorrow. Juarez band concerts fill the plaza all day.
Miners report rich placer gold discoveries in Lower California field. Prospectors flock to sites as crews test exposed gravels and nearby rivers for payable yields. Local officials monitor activity and grant provisional claims as prospecting continues.
Three prospectors arrive from Lower California about 50 miles south of Camp Compania bearing evidence of a placer gold field with claims of substantial richness. They report escape of over $200,000 in gold dust from the mines.
In St Louis the Transit union held a July 9 meeting in the west end Coliseum with over 2000 attendees. They resolved to renew the strike, accusing the company of repeatedly violating the July 2 agreement by hiring outsiders and not reinstating union men, while the company denies the charges.
Sunday evening at 7 30 three shots rang out in the Bank saloon behind Albers drug store. Bartender Edward Walmsley, recently dismissed, fired at proprietor Chas Bergsland and at Dave Andrews and Murphy. Walmsley was arrested by Officers Dwyer and Cristley after the incident. no clear motive was given.
Judge W. Hawkke of Alamogordo is in the city on professional business. He is visiting local courts for judicial matters and meeting with officials.
Inspector of Customs Logan and Chinese Inspector Mehan arrested two Chinese men in Strauss New Mexico found in the United States without credentials. They had traveled from Juarez and were attempting to enter the interior. A hearing before United States Commissioner Howe resulted in deportation orders. A third Chinese man was arrested later today for unlawful presence and jailed awaiting hearing.
A one sided baseball game at Athletic park saw the Colts defeat the G H team 7 to 3. Hansen starred with 3 singles and 1 two bagger, Pratt pitched well for GH, and Criss and Schauers clashed briefly before police separated them. Umpire Laffont. Deming next Monday.
Chicago falls to Boston 11 to 4 while Cincinnati loses 9 to Brooklyn. St Louis beats Philadelphia 10 to 6 and Pittsburg defeats New York 4 to 2 in Saturday games.
J Portillo and Manuel Barela were arrested by Officers Scott and Mitchell on charges of assault to kill after a four handed fight near Siath and Stanton. Manuel Morales suffered serious neck and facial injuries and was semi conscious from blood loss. Other assailants fled. Portillo and Barela were moved to Sheriff Boone’s custody.
A thief tried to force entry into Mrs. Pauls residence at Campbell and Wyoming. He was shot at by Sir Paul and by Officer Billy Saith. none hit. The robber fled but is described by police and likely to be caught.
Lincoln Neb July 9 Governor Pointer estimates Bryan wins if he carries any doubtful states. He lists Alabama Arkansas Florida Georgia Kentucky Louisiana Mississippi Missouri Montana Nebraska North Carolina South Carolina Tennessee Texas Virginia Colorado Kansas Maryland Indiana South Dakota Idaho Kansas City totals 220. McKinley side claims 131. Ohio and Michigan doubtful. Lost income tax plank discussed by national committee leaders Segar and Bryan aides. They hope to win over Populists and push Stevenson for VP. Nationwide campaign plan targets New York and middle west.
The committee for the sheriffs convention reports strong support with nearly a thousand dollars pledged to light the park for three nights of festivities. Music will come from the McGinty or Mexican bands, with receptions at Hotel Orndorff and the roof garden of the new auditorium. A special Southern Pacific train will run Wednesday for visiting strangers.
