The duke and his duchess touring the United States arrive in El Paso in a private car of President Zimmerman of the Cincinnati Hamilton and Dayton railway. They travel with Lord Lambert and plan a California journey, sharing views on Queen Victoria and the Transvaal war with local reporters.
The New Mexico Territorial Legislature devoted the day to eulogies for Maximiliano Luna with Friday set aside for Roman Baca. The council adopted rules after a debate over requiring a two thirds vote to call up out of order the report of the committee on contests. The two thirds rule prevailed following C. A. Joe Bailey was elected United States senator at noon in Austin on January 22. He received 27 of 29 votes with Atlee of Webb county as his opponent. In the house the tally was Bailey 110, Crane 1, Reagan 1, Chilton 2.
Shelby M. Cullom was formally elected United States senator from Illinois for the fourth term by both houses of the General Assembly in Springfield.
Charles W. Miller of El Paso has been granted a pension of ten dollars monthly. Washington reports the approval on January twenty two.
The Hague Jan 22 Kruger started for Utrecht amid cheering crowds at the railroad station. He said he felt very well upon emerging from illness for the first time in days.
In Des Moines on January 22 President McLean of the state university suspended ten sophomore students for kidnapping the freshman class president. On January 14 those students grabbed President Stites on the street, forced him into a hack, and drove him ten miles to a farmhouse where he was confined for two days.
Chief inspector Cochran received word from Chicago inspectors that a missing registered package containing $2000 was found in the cellar of baggage master John Hanson in Hampton Iowa. Hanson's arrest is reported.
The House appears ready to approve Senate amendments to the army reorganization bill. The main point of contention centers on staff features, which remains the critical issue between the bodies.
San Antonio January 22 Steve Brodie the noted bridge jumper is dying of consumption in this city. He is not expected to live more than a few days.
Houston mayor Brashear announces resignation due to ill health. The statement dated January 22 says he will step down from office soon, ending his tenure in the city government.
