Henry C Corbin is named adjutant general of the army in a promotion from colonel dated May 1896. His career spans Civil War service from 1862, roles in the 14th U S Colored Inf and 38th Infantry, duty with Sheridan in Texas, frontier actions in Kansas, New Mexico, and border service. He served near Garfield during the president's fatal illness and is a G A R and Sons of the Revolution member. He is the brother of N S Corbin of Pullman.

Campbell withdrew from consideration per national leader request, then refused the post after confirmation of the other man’s odds.
