Wm J Bryan narrowly escaped serious injury in Paterson New Jersey when frightened horses nearly toppled his carriage as he headed to a Democratic mass meeting. He walked to the hall through rain and smoke, then spoke two and a half hours on money trusts and expansion amid a packed audience.
President McKinley plans to issue a proclamation within 48 hours to re call the Hawaiian legislature dissolved months ago. The move aims to reestablish government amid plague consequences as several thousand persons remain homeless in Washington.
G Gol som was executed in Birmingham for the 1898 murder of deputy sheriff Robert Warneck. He confessed the crime last night. Warneck, a Cincinnati native, was killed in November 1898, and his widow later died by suicide.

This morning at 10 J. A. Smith's work team fled the Santa Fe yards after breaking a switch and losing a wagon wheel while heading for the dairy. Mr. Smith pursued with his mare but the pair outpaced the ace and the outfit stopped for lunch at Mr. Smith's expense, ten dollars.
Washington correspondent O'Brien Moore is visiting the city for a few days en route to Los Angeles to join his wife and child who have been in California for months due to the child's illness.
In Washington on February 9 a large national audience gathered as General Henry W. Lawton’s funeral was held at the Presbyterian Church of the Covena at 2 pm. Admission was by card and the church was filled with mourners including many notable figures. Three thousand soldiers accompanied the body to the grave and nine ten guns fired from Potomac boats marked the cortege. An immense crowd surrounded Arlington as the ceremony concluded.
W J Cox, back from the National Live Stock convention in Fort Worth, says El Paso has strong chances to land the 1902 meet. He notes rival cities Salt Lake City Kansas City and Chicago influenced 1901 votes, but anticipates El Paso support from Kansas City and Omaha if Chicago and Denver contend in 1902. He warns stockmen favor El Paso for cattle raiser attendance given its geographic position and equal or better appeal than other cities. El Paso ranks among the top western convention towns and places of interest.
First Lieut. Bush stationed at Fort Bliss returned from Fort Sam Houston San Antonio where he sat the captain’s exam. He passed and expects his commission soon to command Company A. Capt. Laughborough will depart for San Antonio tonight to test for major and, upon his promotion, Lieut. Bush will command Company A at the post.
