Army units used heavy artillery during ongoing engagements with Boer forces this morning. Reports describe bombardment along front lines with artillery fire affecting positions and surrounding areas.
London dispatch reports Boer positions shelled east of Slingerfontein and west of Topaleskop with a 15 pounder shrapnel gun targeting guns. Buller lists 2 officers killed and 15 wounded, 216 ranks wounded or killed, Major Smythe and Lt Shaft among the officers. Brabant's horse detachment captures by Boers, while Buller holds Spearman’s Camp and Ladysmith relief is believed certain.
A cyclone near Collinsville Illinois damaged coal mine housing at Heitz Bluff and caused multiple injuries. Wrecked buildings burned. one fatality reported. The storm followed by a fierce hail and rain in St Louis with widespread disruption. telegraph poles and wires toppled north and east of Collinsville. A blizzard grips Atchison Kansas and South Nebraska with heavy snow and drifting delaying trains and downed lines.
A head on freight collision on the Bear Creek division of the New York Central near Peale tunnel leaves three dead and three seriously injured. The deceased are Oliver C. Bennett and Mark Mac Farland both engineers and A. M. Avenue fireman from Williamsport and Jersey Shore respectively. Injured include P. C. Creighton and John Linguist brakemen and John Kane fireman from Jersey Shore. Reports indicate additional fatalities among other trainmen.
Representative Payne of New York reports from the Ways and Means Committee a bill to extend customs laws to Puerto Rico. Minority views are submitted by Representative Richardson of Tennessee. Payne plans to call the measure up Thursday. The House also passes a bill restoring the frigate Constitution to its active service condition.
The body of Gen. Lawton reached Pennsylvania Station this morning with cavalry from Fort Myers presenting military honors. It was taken to the Church of the Covenant where funeral services are set for tomorrow and a guard of honor was arranged at the church.
Charles Walker and two companions left a country party near Lincoln Nebraska last night. The team ran away on the return ride, the buggy overturned on the frozen ground. Walker was killed instantly from a broken neck while his companions were dazed and bruised.
Special Dispatch reports from Barksdale that Tom Cunningham of Uvalde Texas died by suicide using a 44 Winchester. He had not recovered from a fall from a horse and reportedly intended to shoot a hawk when he killed himself. His mother, distressed by his absence, found him in a pool of blood with his head blown apart.
El Paso is urged to contribute toward Prof. Carrera’s Paris mineral exhibit trip. New Mexico counties face a $50 per county request after the legislature failed to fund the expense. The total cost is about $1500 for about ten months’ stay, with El Paso seen as pivotal to mining interests in the southern territory.

Walcher also known as James I Walcher after a U S Mexico alert linked him to the Oklahoma killing of Col John F Stone a prominent Kingfisher citizen and National Guard commander. The Oklahoma governor posted a $300 reward and Juarez authorities plan to turn him over.
Pascal Metro hides under a grass outfit like a haystack to escape after stealing a ball and chain from the city jail. He was nabbed by Officer Christley, fined one dollar, then recaptured and confined. A reward is offered for the iron. Elks plan a major entertainment at the Orndorff with Louise Brehany company's star cast and a Faust garden scene. The El Paso library gains Carnegie funds and new books arrive for distribution next Tuesday.
The Houston Manufacturers Association offered a $50 prize for articles opposing a Texas tax plan viewed as harming farmers merchants and laborers. L S Fawcett won for editorial work in the Houston Times, arguing the proposal fails to tax unearned increments and penalizes labor and enterprise, risking idleness and poverty.
The Kansas City Southern Railway will title the newly reorganized Kansas City Pittsburg and Gulf railroad to be sold at foreclosure in March. William Harrity of Philadelphia says the new company should be organized and take possession by April. Upset price will be set high to protect nonparticipants, with no expected delays.
