Mrs Maria Place of Brooklyn lasshed by jealousy executes a brutal attack on her nineteen year old step daughter Ida Place using vitriol an axe then smothers her with quilts. She then assaults her husband William Place wounding him and turns on the gas before being arrested.
President Dole and Mrs Dole with their party visit the Pan American exposition site and attend a banquet as plans unfold. In Cleveland he meets relatives before continuing to St Louis, Riverside, and San Francisco with a return voyage set for February 22 or 23 aboard the Coptic or Mariposa.
Indianapolis February 8. The new state central committee meets to organize and choose a chairman to replace George F. McCulloch of Muncie who declined reelection. Harry S New Warren Bigzler George W Self George W Holman and KE Nebecker are named as leading candidates with ex President Harrison allies backing New or Nebecker to win the senatorship.
The Louisiana state constitutional convention met in New Orleans on February 8 with 110 Democrats and 21 others. Delegates began assembling at noon to draft a new constitution without voter submission, subject to limits on local indebtedness taxation levy and other specified issues.
The Drexel mansion on Madison Avenue hosts a grand ball for Miss Josephine Drexel with Delmonico’s catering. Despite the mansion’s large private ballroom the event draws hundreds of Philadelphia society figures and leading New York guests. Dispatch from Constantinople reports a powerful quake in Balikear on February 8 destroying homes and claiming 120 lives while leaving about 4000 people homeless. Local authorities rush relief and shelter to the affected area.
London reports Parliament opened with a calm mood of peace and progress. The Queen's Speech omits China and currency reform but urges a local government bill for Ireland and raises army and navy allowances. Foreign affairs focus centers on the Irish local government bill and eastern issues.
The St Louis case reveals Chris Von Der Ahe, baseball magnate, kidnapped by Detective Nicholas Bender of Pittsburg. Attorneys argue the arrest illegal and seek bail. Details say he resisted, was handcuffed, and transported to East St Louis then Pittsburg amid threatened damages suits.
In Albany sixteen residents escaped a four story tenement fire at 31 North Lansing Street with thirteen bodies burned. Firefighters faced great headway as residents groped through flames during the blaze. In Reading Mount Carmel House a four story frame fire left seventy five people cut off by the stairway with thrilling escapes as people jumped or used ropes and ladders. Moss Sallie Davis was killed after losing her grip.
More than 300 delegates from leading organizations gather in Tampa for the South and West Commercial Congress opening. The group, formerly the South and West Grain and Trade Congress, aims to boost regional trade and shift shipments from eastern ports to southern ports. Governor Bloxham extends a welcome to delegates.
Chicago built trades chief Edw Hodgeman, accused of theft of nearly twenty five thousand dollars, was captured while attempting flight to the Klondike, detained in a remote Northwest Territory area.
A distinct quake was felt in Lynchburg at about 3 pm with reports from Pulaski Bedford City Salem Witheville and other southern Virginia towns. The tremor lasted about three seconds and caused no damage though Bedford City noted a sound like an explosion prior to the shock.
Reports say the Cross River expedition of Niger coast protectorate troops was massacred while destroying towns near Assay Creek in Akaasa on the West Coast of Africa. Capt. Fenton and Capt. Middleton were among the wounded. Royal Niger Company troops have sent a constabulary force to rescue the prisoners.
The Reichszine declares an imperial ordinance to ban the import of living plants and fresh plant refuse from America, including packing materials, to prevent the San Jose shield louse. Fresh fruit and refuse are also banned if infested, with exceptions for goods remaining on ships and authority to grant exemptions.
Only property owners vote in today’s tax election for El Paso public schools with an annual ad valorem levy not exceeding 0.5 percent. At 1 PM eighty votes total were recorded across wards 1 to 4 in a city of 12 000, with polling sites listed and judges named. Tomorrow’s ballot calls for school trustees as all citizens may vote.
Police notified the coroner that a horribly disfigured male body was found floating in the East River. The corpse has limbs severed and the head split, and investigators suspect it may replicate the Guldensuppe case.
Washington February 8 cabinet session extended as the president and advisers decide to send four infantry companies to Skaguay to establish an army post there.
