Prof War man presents an evening of readings and recitations called Word Paintings at the YMCA. A library benefit concert is set for Chopin hall Saturday night with Mrs J Goodman performing Liszt Twelfth Rhapsodie on piano. The piece highlights the program along with other selections.
The Alpine Avalanche reports a parade of visitors and residents in town, including KR. W. Tansill and B. C. Watson at the Pierson from Mexico, U.S. Cattle Inspector Lobb recovering from la grippe, Dr. Manning in from the east, Mrs. O’Niell bound for Chadron, Neb., and many others. Regulars like J. Price en route to New York, J. L. Campbell heading to San Antonio and Dallas, and Mrs. Belle H. Small plus Mrs. Howard McCrary passing through from Mexico to Topeka and Kansas City are noted amid long lists of arrivals and departures.
Samuel F Harwell 38 of Memphis died yesterday morning of consumption. Embalmed remains shipped to Tennessee by T and P line. Mrs S E Masterson formerly of El Paso died Jan 2 in Sacramento Mountains of heart trouble near Weed. Frances Truchillo 23 died in this city brain fever and funeral today at Evergreen. Annie T Davison 33 died at Sisters Hospital of consumption. Emerson and Berrien embalmed remains shipped by Texas and Pacific to West Virginia for burial.
The Grau company about forty strong with an orchestra arrived from the west and will rest a week in El Paso before resuming work. Manager Grau says the troupe has been on the road since June and has done strong business in Arizona. They plan nightly performances at the opera house and expect to spend about $1000 this week. St Clement’s tea postponed from Wednesday to Thursday.
Washington reports show the senate, after a brief executive session, amended the arbitration treaty. The first amendment adds a policy shield clause avoiding broad disputes. the second removes reference to the Sweden Norway umpire. Other senate business included Japan treaty provisions and the Nicaragua canal bill discussion. A Chicago murder suicide follows a jealous lover incident.
The Supreme Court affirmed the Nicholas law taxing express companies in Ohio by a bare majority. Justice White and Justices Field Harlan Brown dissented. The court also upheld Indiana's telegraph tax law on appeal from the state supreme court, with Justices Harlan and White again dissenting.
James Wilson arrived in Des Moines from Canton Ohio and said by long distance telephone that he has accepted the portfolio of agriculture in President-elect McKinley’s cabinet. He conferred with McKinley in Canton prior to his decision.
The New York market started with active trading and strength. Northern Pacific preferred rose from to with other issues advancing 4 to 4 percent. In related notes, Mexico City police estimate at least four thousand sneak thieves operate in the city and suburbs, with over a third believed to be in Belem.
Washington report notes President withdrew William D. McHugh as district judge nominee for Nebraska and named William H. Munger in his place after Judiciary Committee delays. Also London dispatch: Mrs Carew convicted in Yokohama for arsenic death of her husband Walter Raymond Hallowell Carew, secretary of Yokohama United Club, sentenced to death with possible British ministerial review.
A burglary at Bradley's Bank in Eldon Iowa occurred at 3 this morning. The safe was blown open with nitroglycerine and all funds were stolen. Bank officials withheld the amount but it likely ranged from three to five thousand dollars. The burglars escaped in a stolen team and buggy.
An American engineer named Bennett led police to quell a Siamese mob that attacked Herr Kempmann the German minister to Siam. The crowd's assault was checked and the minister was rescued with police aid.
The president sent to the Senate nominations for Martin A. Knapp of New York as interstate commissioner of commerce and for W H Munger of Nebraska to be United States district judge for the district of Nebraska.
An explosion aimed at the Gardner Morrow & Co bank in Hollidaysburg Pennsylvania caused only minor damage to the bank and nearby structures. Authorities report no motive for the attempted explosion and no injuries.
Lee B. McFarland, teller at the Second National Bank of Parkersburg West Virginia, admits a $45,000 shortage in his accounts due to speculative losses. The shortage has been made good and accounts for February 1.

Kansas City cattle man T. E. Peters allegedly fought Yardmaster McCormack in the Mexican Central yards yesterday after making remarks about the official’s ancestry. Peters was knocked out on the track according to reports.
The full Juarez El Paso street car fleet assembled at the head of EE Paso street this afternoon awaiting a switch relocation. The Chinese celebrated the new year with loud festivities and today receive visitors. The Mexican Central offers a single round trip fare between the city and Mexico for the first three days of this week.
