The Empress of India reports mass killings by rebels led by Yamadz in Sze Chuen. About 60 deaths and 20 000 native Christians made homeless as six thousand Catholic refugees seek safety in Central China’s city. European missionaries among the victims.
War Department orders regular infantry regiments to prepare for transport to the Philippines. Twelfth at Jefferson Barracks Missouri Twenty second at Fort Crook Nebraska Third at Fort Snelling Minnesota Seventeenth at Columbus Barracks Ohio and Fourth at Fort Sheridan Illinois. Embarkation date and port undecided, depending on available transport.
New York reports a holiday rush in international money orders with millions in value moving overseas. About 15 000 orders worth around 200 000 dollars were sent on a single steamer, and New York issues 10 000 orders daily amid rising prosperity. Most orders go to the west and northwest, with Norway and Sweden receiving much of the funds.
President McKinley arrived in Montgomery to a festive, decorated line of march and spoke at the capitol and Old Ship Baptist church, with receptions for whites and colored citizens. In Tuskegee he was greeted by large crowds and visited the Normal and Industrial Institute led by Booker T. Washington.
The president spoke briefly to black students, delivering a tribute to Booker T. Washington and to the institute he leads.
In New York on December 14 condolence telegrams flooded the Brice residence on Fifth Avenue. Reinforcements promised by neighboring farmers have yet to arrive as the standoff risks a clash. The victim Kreichtbaum was found after his dog remained at the burial scene.
In Taos last Monday Sheriff Trujillo was killed after arresting two American photographers for not removing hats. Gifford, accused by friends of the sheriff’s death, hid in a saloon defended by armed locals. U S Deputy Marshal Sheridan dispatched to restore order and pursue rioters.

Three arrests were reported by the police last night. JK Nicholson was fined for drunk and disorderly conduct after being arrested by Franco. Francisco Manan faced charges of drunk and disturbing the peace. the recorder set a $2 fine and he was ordered to help clean street crossings. The Troy Laundry driver, accused of leaving his horse unhitched, was absent at the morning term and must appear this afternoon.
