Bids opened today for the largest navy ship building program in history as the nation pushes ahead with a vast orders for warships. Key shipyards and defense contractors competed to secure the contract under a government program expanding the fleet.
Bids were opened at noon by the navy department for a record navy contract. It covers five battleships the Pennsylvania New Jersey Georgia Virginia and Rhode Island and six armored cruisers the Colorado West Virginia Nebraska California Maryland and South Dakota.
General Kitchen reports an attack on a Pretoria to Rustenburg convoy by forces under General De Wet. Boers burned half the convoy. British reinforcements arrived and the attackers dispersed. Fifteen British troops were killed and twenty wounded.
London dispatch reports the Prince of Wales or the Duke of York may attend the August America's Cup races. The prince shows strong interest in Sir Thomas Lipton's Shamrock II and plans to be a passenger during trials. He hopes to travel to New York for the next international event.
Washington reports the fight for a straight beer tax cut to $1 will likely move to the House floor when the Ways and Means committee bill reaches debate. Brewers may force an unexpected bid if the proposal stalls.

Hammond to examine property and reserve funds may be used to further workings. dividend for quarter ending December planned.
The Duke of Manchester travels by private car attached to an Erie Westbound freight to Ohio with his bull pups and family wardrobe. An Irishman taunts the duke from the car, claiming a Hoboken dog can outfight the trio, provoking the nobleman’s ire.
The supreme court rejected Cruz Flores versus the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe railway from El Paso. Governor Sayers criticizes Galveston relief committees for charging for distributing relief. Adjutant general heads to Washington tomorrow to present Texas war claims.

From Madrid and The Hague reports indicate Portugal returned exequateur of Herr Pott Dutch consul at Lorenzo Marquez triggering a diplomatic rupture. An official Dutch statement denies a rupture and notes ministers have left posts to brief their governments on the misunderstanding.
The nine foot tall elk statue, commissioned by El Paso lodge B P O E 187, arrived and will stay in Brunner’s window until January 18. It then goes to Evergreen cemetery for pedestal placement and unveiling January 20 before a large Elks gathering. The nine foot statue weighs about 1000 pounds and will cost $1000 in position.
El Paso reports a population of 15,906 according to the twelfth census. George LaTrace of El Paso named assistant engineer at the Osage Indian School in Oklahoma. Cecil Cadena appointed postmaster of Socorro in El Paso County.
Five men were killed when a locomotive on the Delaware Lackawanna and Western railroad exploded at Alexander, twenty two miles east of Buffalo this morning. The Buffalo Herald operated two telephones one in the business office and one in the editorial rooms.
