Pittsburg August 26 The Republican state convention met with Quay in control and Col Elkins as temporary chairman. Elkins drew applause by opposing civil service reform. Beacon was named treasurer and Major Monulick auditor.
S. H. Newman of Mutual Life touts the company as the largest and strongest in the world. He notes its unparalleled dividend record and claims it has paid $3,000 on a $1,000 policy and $30,000 on a $10,000 policy every year for twenty years and continues on old policies.
A San Juan County note mentions Bishop John P. Newman of the Methodist church as presiding at the Arizona conference to be held in Prescott this year. He is described as a strong pulpit orator and active in politics.
Pittsburg August 26 Judge Marcus Wacheron of the circuit court ruled the alien tax law from the last Pennsylvania legislature unconstitutional. The law levied three cents a day on aliens to be deducted from wages by employers who would remit the tax to the state.
City of Mexico August 26 Jose Venter a Spanish anarchist from Barcelona is under arrest charged with taking part in a plot to assassinate the Duke of Arcos Spanish minister here. Incriminating papers were found in Venter s possession.
Cholera appears among Northampton regiment troops stationed in Bombay on August 26. Precautions are being taken to prevent spread of the disease.

The plan links Japan Mail Steamship to dominate trans Pacific and interior coasting trade. A conference in New York with Deutsch Bank and Morgan group advances the agreement.
The Cherokee council met on August 26 and the chief sent a message to the president demanding the Dawes commission be stopped. He urged that acts abolishing tribal government be carried before the Supreme Court, and if the decision is adverse, the matter be referred to a foreign power for settlement.

In Memphis Tennessee on August 26 a Illinois Central freight derailed due to a broken axle. An unknown Black man was killed and the engineer and fireman were seriously injured.
Berlin dispatch reports Dr. Voo Holleben likely named to fill the vacancy at the German embassy in Washington, according to Staats Zeitung.
An accident at the Moncada pumping works in Valencia province fatally injures twenty female workers. The incident occurred in the evening and prompted emergency response and investigations by local authorities.
